Drag shocks on the street? Safe?
« on: January 09, 2008, 11:49:36 AM »

I wanted to get a set of Comp Eng adjustable drag shocks for my car, if I adjust the fronts down to 60/40 and the rears to 50/50, can they be used safely on the streets? What kind of problems would I have?

most of what Ive ever heard is the drag shocks, if set correctly are fine for the street.  its when you get into off-setting the ratio's to 90/10 or 70/30 that the handling starts to become unpredictable and somewhat unstable for street driving.

set to 50/50 I think theyre little more than lightweight shocks like any others.

90/10's are ok on the street except when you go over a bump or dip that's at angle, then it gets a bit strange.

I've got the 318 A/C torsion bars, worn out shocks on the front as it came to me.

I've picked up a set of the CE adj shocks for the front and a set of MP drag shock
for the rear.  We'll see how it goes.

I've also got the 318 AC bars, but the front shocks are old koni's which are still pretty stiff.  I was thinking of trying to find some light duty replacements from the parts store.

just had the car out 2 nights ago with my  90/10  and 70/30  with slant six t bars i can see where it could get iffy handling wise  you just have to drive it right ion the street with the drag shocks.

This all sounds good. I just got to wre I need shocks on my car. Mostly street and alittle drag. Were would I want to set drag shocks for every day driving? I see summit has a very inexpensive drag shock. Any opions? Thanks.

We are using the front adjustable drga shocks from Summit racing on our Dart, we have them set at 90/10 I think so. I will have to ask my Dad, I haven't noticed any difference in ride quality. When we drive the car on the street we mostly just cruize the car and do a couple quick speed ups unleashing the power alittle bit. Other than that it sits in the garage waiting if where not driving it or racing it.

90/10's on the front and 50/50's on the back, 6 cyl torsion bars and it drives fine. Of course that is a smallblock with manual steering.

90/10's on the front with a big block, with some HP,when you womp on it on the street it's down right nasty, but fun.

CE adjustables,,90/10  in front of ladder barred, spooled 60,,now that's a fun ride. been riding those front shocks for 7 years, set at the same spot. the only time it gets "iffy" is when cresting a hill with any kind of curve @ the same time

I ended up buying the Summit Drag shocks front and rear, it looks like they are just cheap adjustable drag shocks. I am going to put the back ones on for now (since I dont have ANY!) and I will wait until I rebuild the front suspension until I do the fronts.

I've run worn out shocks, just for the weight transfer, in my old GTS Dart (w/440). The under power was OK, but when getting on the brakes I smacked the oil pan against one of those Bott's dots. I had a leak all  the way home (less than a mile fortunately). Oh, I broke the dot too, but that was little consilation for pulling the pan to weld it up again.
I've had little issue with the RR, but it is a 90% track 10% street car so I can't say what long term effects are. If it was me, I'd look into gettting the double adjustable shocks and learning what settings worked on the track and what worked on the streets. At least then I could switch back and forth as situations changed.

It's just a bit strange with the loose extension. Every time you hit the gas the front flies up. If they're adjustable, just tighten them on the street and loosen at the track.

OK, Dumb question.  How do these things adjust.  I thought you had to take them off and compress and turn them.  Can they be easily adjusted at the track?

I also got the summit drag shocks for my rear, using qa1 stocker stars up front. The quality of the summit shocks is a bit disturbing, especially that dodgy rubber bushing with paint on it... I am having my friend turn down the '74-up bushings I had left over from my energy suspension kit to fit instead of the rubber. How are those shocks? good quality, or should I replace?
