225 /6 into 65 Dart
« on: January 24, 2008, 06:05:58 PM »

I have a chance to buy a 65 Dart Gt that had a 6 but motor is gone.  I have a /6 225 from my 73 Duster.  My questions. Can I put the 225 with the trans. into the Dart without alot of work?  Eventually I want to put a V/8.  Which is the easiet install?  What rearend works with this early A body?  I've seen some really nice 65-66 Darts.  I thought I would install the 6 and drive it till I finished the Duster then change out the motor on the Dart. Does anyone some some pictures for inspiration?

Thanks,
Gene

If the slant and trans are both 73 then it should slide right in. The 73 engine will have a different size crank hub then the 65 trans. If it is an automatic push button car, you will need to do something about a shifter. You would have to do that with a auto for a V8 also, unless you have a V8 push button transmission. Any generic floor shifter should work ok and should still be usable with the V8 swap. If it is a stick car then as long as you are swapping in a stick with the same amount of speeds it should work.

You will also need an aftermarket throttle cable. On 63-66, they used a rod type throttle linkage, and from 67-76 they used a cable.

Find out a lot of Slant 6 info on this site: www.slantsix.org/forum/index.php

66 used a throttle cable and so did 65, I think.

no, 1964and 1965 also used cable...not linkage.
my 65 dart is an original 273 v8.
i got it with the motor and trans out of the car.
I put a later slant six in it temporaraly while i build the 273.
I personally wanted to keep it colum shifted since thats the way the factory had it.
In order to do that you need a 1965 slant six tranny..unfortunatly.
it took me about 3 months to find a good one.
I know someone told me some company makes a changeover kit from the linkage style kit for 66- up trannies to the cable shifted 64-5 and earlier.
I know 1965 is colum cable shifted.1964 is pushbutton cable shifted(probly could make it work)
The easyest alternative is finding a 1965 trans or going with another linkage style trans and cutting a hole in the floor.
Only other issues are radiator if the car is an original v8. mounts.either get the rite oil pan or change k member.
mine went in in an hour or so.

Only AC slants got a throttle cable in 65 and 66. Non AC cars still had rod throttle linkage. My 66 GT convertable has rod linkage.

if it had a slant six it had a rod instead of a cable, you can take the complete gas pedal and mount from a body or b body cars and adapt it to the dart easily and use a throttle cable from the pedal assembly for the swap to later model carburetor(good Idea) and 66 model had linkage type trans so that is good and if yours has cable type transmission I might have the proper steering column and linkage for you
