opened up the engine last night....
« on: January 25, 2008, 10:08:04 AM »

well it spun #1 bearing..  #2 looks prety bad too.  just have to figure out what i want to do now....   i should have a set of rods in the shed so i can replace these two and i may have a crank out there too. if not i have a couple 360 motors that i should be able to rob one from.   not sure if this crank is able to be cut... still have to pull the rest apoart and see if there is any more damage.

would be a good time to make it a 408.  lol...

Its a perfect time for a stroker.  Might want to figure out why it spun and fix that before you rebuild, could it be a piece of junk in the oil system? Did you lose oil pressure?

Looks painful...I like the 408 idea myself... "From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be engine that was broken, The stroker again shall be king." LOL

it had pressure when it was knocking..  who knows..   everything will be checked out before anything gets done..  still have to pull it apart the rest of the way.

If yu were looking at doing teh stroker, now would be the time. A replacement crank and two rods would call for a rebalancing unless you didn't care about vibrations. Shame 440 Source doesn't do small blocks. But at the very lest the whole thing needs to be recleaned throughout. Every passsage and part needs inspecting and cleaning. A little bit O'glitter goes a long ways inside an engine.

yea wish 440source did someting for small blocks....

saw ohio cranks kit for $1200

this place for $900   http://www.cnc-motorsports.com/product.asp?ProdID=20609&OGroup0=9423

not sure what i want to do...   not sure if i want to dish out the cash for a 408 right now..    i'm de-tuning to make it a better cruiser..   would really like to do a 5.7 hemi but can't swing that right now..  best bet is to probably fix the 360 and save for a 5.7 project...

I believe you will also need new pistons also if you go with the stroker crank. Correct me if i'm wrong. Mike

Hello:

Those bearing and crank pics give me the willys....anyway  agree perfect time to grow it up to a stoker.  Have you got a shelf or box for
"offerings to the Gods of speed"? Thats a good place for the pieces.

i would go for the stroker and a smaller cam, maybe some mild porting on the eddys,  go just as fast with more manners. make it real efficient.  i could see why you wouldnt want to do that if you want a 5.7 though.  if you think the 5.7 is really a possibility then just clean it up, have a set of rods resized, rebuilt, crank turned and everything rebalanced.  youll be good to go for while for just a few bucks.

Is a stroker in your budget?  I.E. are all your supporting mods in place like fuel system etc to support the added HP?  If so I see no reason not to.

Try giving Mike Ware at Muscle Motors a call to see what he has.  He built my hemi, and is a pretty good guy.  He has quite a few differnt package deals I think.  I visited his shop and he does some pretty neat work.

joe, make sure you do something to keep your interest in the car alive. I remember a post you made a couple months back about rebuilding the motor and being worried about lossing interest in the car because you can't drive it. Do yourself a favor and find a beater car like a diplomat with a good 318 and swap it over, at least then your can still drive the car even if it's not as fast.
