1968 Dodge Dart
« on: February 02, 2008, 09:11:03 PM »

I just got a 1968 dart, it says Dart 273 on the dash, but it has a 340 in it now.  Did the 68 have a stripe around the back or not ? It does have the 69 hood on it with 340 lettering.

Thanks Dan

Probably says dart 270, which is the model.

The 68 had the double stripes on the tail.

The 68 and 69 bulge hoods are the same, with different inserts.

The 68 Dart had the stripe if it was a GTS (2 small and 2 larger). The Swinger had it also, along with the GTS, but I think that model started in 69, not available in 68, and a different stripe (2 small and one large). The hood inserts are different as 68 had the four ovals and no CID call out  the insert like the 69's. The hoods are interchangealbe but the inserts match only their years. The GTS inserts are rather pricey as opposed to the 69's. I'd rather have something rather than nothing until I can swap or buy (ouch!) the right ones. I keep hoping somebody will repop them but not yet.

P.S. Mine started out life as a Dart 270 also.

Jim, does your GTS have the horizontal stripe? I ran across a '68 GTS rotting in a yard not far from my  home last year and saw it with what I assumed was a factory horizontal stripe. If you have one, could you post a clear image of the stripe? Happen to know how many '68 GTS cars had the horizontal stripe?

It doesn't have the stripe at this time. I was not happy with the way the body work came out twenty years ago (hard to believe it's been that long) so I never spent the money on the stripe. Some day the car will be done properly and the stripe will go back on. It was the less common stripe, but I have seen quite a few with it.

$325  Shocked  OUCH! I wonder if we could get the guy who makes the plastic rallye centers to expand his operation to include these too. (There are times I wish I had access to an injection mold machine.)
