the mini starter is one of the main reasons I'm trying to make time to get the pro parts on the car Sad

hedmans requiring the big one that's 4 years old is making me nervous! and changing that sucker is a major pain....

Oh yea check these out... I ordered some for the pro parts today.. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=FLO%2D15925&N=700+115&autoview=sku

I'd trust the Schumacher mount before I would the cast iron tabs on the OEM block.  Obviously for ridiculous horsepower, the engine plate is still king.

I have the magnum mount and that has bolt throughs and I'm not expecting to need a torque strap on my 496. It's pretty solid.

I suppose you could shim them a bit but it is already so tight in there I don't know if I'd want to. It would just create less room at the back of the motor Sad

Tried to stab the motor last night and it was a no-go as shortblock. Gave up trying to snake starter around the headers. I am guilty of not working TOOO hard at it since I know the new motor can use the extra 1/4" primaries... Looks like I'm committing to the pro-parts since I'd rather do that and cut holes than pull the steering column lol...

I gave the hedman's a shot at staying in, looks like they turned me down more to come!

I am leaning towards the Pro Parts myself now. I was hoping you were going to say you did not want to cut holes and you would sell them to me.  Grin

Im a few days from running on my 1 3/4 TTIs. 400/500 low deck.
I have cut outs for it. I may go motorized, but the TTIs are smallish.

flyboy, your build is going to be very similar to mine.  I am using the Hedman 1 3/4 B body headers.  Once I figured out what had to be clearanced, they fit very well, and are nice and tight to the floor.  Better than any small block header I ever ran.  From a horsepower standpoint, I made 415 HP and 450 lb/ft of torque with a mild Crane cam.  I actually exceeded the torque numbers from a magazine article which did the same build but using 1 7/8 headers.  I am now going with the MP 292/509 (114) a new intake and carb and hope to see 450 at least.

I am going to order the Hedman headers today from Summit. When I get them I am going to wrap them up in tape to test fit them, that way if they dont fit, I can send them back for just the shipping charges. I got a local guy that will ceramic coat them for $100, he just does not polish the coating, which I am fine with.

Grin OK OK OK OK OK OK!!!!

I WISH I HAD MY CAMERA to photograph this for you!!!!

This is what I did:

Hedman B-body headers on a low-deck with 440 source heads... heres the lowdown:

I had my motor on the engine stand and while the k-frame was out decided to mount it to the engine on the stand with the steering box installed and idler/pitman/centerlink; This way I could remove/reinstall all I wanted to until I got it right!!!!! DO NOT!!!! WAIT UNTIL THE MOTOR IS IN THE CAR TO DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE!!!!

Here is where there is interference and needs to be cleared
I WILL TRY TO GET PHOTOS OF THE HEADERS OFF THE CAR FOR YOU!!!!!

The #2 tube needs a 1/8"-1/4" dimple where its close to the steering box right after the plug on the straight-down... bout 2 inches long...
#3 tube needs a slight clearance for the coupler on the box so the steering can rotate... again 1/8 - 1/4 inch dimple bout round as a quarter...
both passenger and driver tubes #3 #6 have to have a dime size 1/8" ding to clear the centerlink/castlenut/cotterpin
#3 tube also needs a lengthways ding to clear the drivers side torsion bar...

#3 AGAIN! may need clearancing for the ministarter I have (CHampion brand) (once again quarter size) but I don't know until I get the trans attached...

I will try to get a picture of the dings I made, even though they look more like large dents hahahahaha  motorinstall

Hey flyboy,

I went ahead and put the motor in with the hedmans, because I just didn't like how close the primaries were to the pan rail. I'm probably going to hold onto em in case I go to a RB in the car or a raised port head. I think you'll run into some clearance issues with a low deck based off the block interference I had. Then again you may not but I'm running out f time to get this car runnin on its own power since we're going to be moving at the end of the month  motorinstall

My hedman's are banged up because I chose not to finesse them into working at the time, and didn't have a torch. Once they fit, they do fit though.

But before I reinstalled them they went to Central Ct Coatings (formally Airborn Coatings) for a sand blast and hi-temp aluminum ceramic coating inside & out.

Don't mess w/ rattle cans. Get them done right.

Mine were $235.

I got the headers this afternoon after arguing with Fedex all day, they said that they tried to deliver them yesterday at 6:40am, and that I was not home. I told them they need to take their heads out of their asses and think about what they were saying. 6:40am? WTF! I think it was a lazy driver that did not feel like delivering them and made that entry first thing that morning. Oh well, I got them late this afternoon.

I fit the headers to the car with the engine out and they seem to clear all the major parts, might need a few small dimples, but all looks good so far. I will try to get the block and trans fit in tomorrow with the mods made for the schumacher sb/bb spool mounts.

Flyboy,
I've been following this post for awhile hoping to use the same setup you are.  I'm putting a 383 in my 74 Duster and want to keep the power steering with the hedmans.  I'm surprised nobody has any info on this combo yet.  My fingers are crossed, good luck!

I test fit the headers in the car without the engine in it, they seem to clear everything, even the power steering, but I'm sure that they will need a few dimples here and there. I have my mockup 400 engine ready to go in it tomorrow to test fit everything, but I still need my manual steering box.

I also started cleaning up the engine bay, I stripped out everything. I first sprayed down everything with Gunk, scrubbed for a while to try to clean off all the years, I dod not have any scrob brushes, so I hosed everything down with oven cleaner and I am going to continue cleaning tomorrow.

I spent the weekend cleaning things up. Its amazing how stubborn 40 years of power steering fluid and dirt can be. I finally got it scrubbed up, I used engine cleaner, oven cleaner, Purple Power, Brakleen, and a bucket of hot soapy water and a scotchbrite pad (worked best).

I cut down the driver's side spool mount to work with the Schumaker mounts and re-drilled the holes. Hopefully I can get the engine test fit in this week.
