Ok to start off I will not pay $450 for a bare 8 3/4 rearend...Tired of getting ripped a new one for these rearends.
Here's my solution.Bought a 68 truck 8 3/4 at a u-pull it for $50 took it to my chassis guy asked him to cut it down.He told me he needed another A-body rearend for measurment.
He put new ends and perch's on it and charsged me $120.
Recap- Rearend $50 Chassis shop work $120 totall $170
Thinking of not getting ripped-Priseless.
Down side of doing it this way I had to wait 4 weeks for Jim to get around to my work.
I know this has been done and posted befor but it's worth posting again for people like me who have forgotten that we other options than paying out are A...

That's the way to do it if you can score a cheap housing. I just had my dana 60 narrowed. It began life in a 76 Ford 3/4 ton. I bought it for $50 with a 4.10 trac-lok. $80 for new ends and $100 to narrow it.

Chuck did a killer job. I may be knocking on his door one of these days when its time for a paint job.

That's what I was thinking about. If you're going to have a rear narrowed, why not do it to a Dana? I guess the pinion snubber mounting may be a problem. What does that Ford Dana have as far as pinion snubber provisions?

Don't use a snubber on a drag car and you don't have a problem.

The other big plus on useing a housing that needs to be narrowed, is that it will then be true and straight. Remeber, 8 3/4 housings are made of some rather thin metal and can tweak realativly easy compared to a dana or such.

yeah i originall had the same plan with a c body rear i had. when i pulled it apart i saw it had a really nast wow in it i cant believe the guy drove the car it would have needed to be re tubed, so i went with a dana. deals are out there, most danas came with 4.10s, they are in every junkyard, i see them all the time on craigslist cheap. the one for my 67 i got lazy, got it as a take off housing on ebay it was like brand new, 35 bucks, 60 to ship. the guy had 70 of them or something. so i had a nice straight new housing with no rust still wearing the original paint for 100 bucks.

I have both Dana's and 8 3/4 rearends it just a matter of if I needed the strenght of a 60 or if I'd just rather have a weight savings of 60 lbs for the 8 3/4
