Roof Drip Rails
« on: February 12, 2008, 07:12:37 PM »

Anyone know if there is anybody who makes replacement drip rails. The rails on my dart are shot from the vinyl top. Or does anyone have a junk donor car they can cut off some and sell me. Its a 74 two door dart. Thanks Guys.  J.R.

I'm not positive of this, but I think what becomes the drip rail is two flanges:  the top flange of the roof sheet metal and the lower flange being from the under, structural framework.  I don't know that you could just cut the flange from another car and weld it on.

What I HAVE seen though, is for people to cut them off and weld the edge of the roof sheet metal to the edge of the lower structure and not have a drip rail.   It can create a pretty cool, custom effect and is quite subtle.   Just a suggestion...

Thanks for the replies. Yes i would be interested in some pics. The body shop guy i spoke with said you could replace them, i do agree with what your saying it is the two pieces joining together to make the lip, but mine are very rotted so i thought i could take extra metal from a donor car and adapt them to mine. Im not sure what to do. Thanks again J.R.

It took me some patience.......cut a 3inch section, weld, grind, weld  cut another section weld, grindweld.  If you cut off big sections the metal will warp and come apart.

Hello:
My serious "go faster" racer friends cut them off to reduce air drag, just a thought.

It's not really very difficult.  Just have to be patient,  best advice is to not cut off the drip rail right against the cab.  I left a little edge, hit it with 36grit to knock the edge  down smooth.  Mig'd it up, with 4,000 tacks, ground the tacks smooth, mig'd again where I missed.  It's pretty solid metal here, just becareful to not go crazy with the heat.

Most wont even notice......but it cost some body supplies and time.  Not really $$$$

The unibody takes a lot of stress in the area where the drip rail is. Nothing wrong with shaving the rails, but any time you shave the rails you should think about adding some reinforcement to the area. Just a suggestion.

loig,  the drip rail is spot welded about every 6 inches.......I replaced it with a solid weld all the way across.  The car does have a small cage, but I wouldnt imagine this splittin at the drip rail with or without a cage after is cut off and welded all the way across...........but who knows   Dunno
