any tips before paint?
« on: February 21, 2008, 09:29:56 PM »

Any last minute tips before i take the car to get painted. Ive been trying to think about things that i should do before paint, but at the same time not sacraficing the quality of the paint job. I think im going to put the doors, hood, and deck lid on so im not trying to hang them on fresh paint. Any ideas, problems, or foresight.  thank you
Dustin
ps the old ad is the original paint my car came with and what im putting back on it.

Dont put it together before paint.....the paint will "bridge" over the door hinges-jams, fender-inner fender edge, etc......it can  look "half-assed" and will crack.........putting together a freshly painted car will take care and patience but will look better when painted apart.  It's also very hard to get even coverage in the jam.

This is with a white car...like yours, metallic is a different story.  updates on the progress

My advice, vacuum out every nook and cranny, then blow them out with dry air, clean the whole car with a wax/degreaser, then when dry clean all the surfaces with a spray on foaming type window cleaner like windex. its your last chance to protect against fish-eyes.

Hanging the doors and such is not a good idea. Imagine trying
to paint all six sides of a door with it installed. Not good. If the car
is indeed painted that way, if you have a alignment problem, you will
break the paint around the bolts in order to align the part. Again,
not good.

Nice car. As stated before, keep the pics coming.

If you can get it, get the good stuff, windex will work in a pinch, but only the aerosol type, the other stuff has blue dye in it. Or, I make my own mix, I use 50% distilled water, 25% windex liquid, and 25% alcohol. I learned this from Kevin Tetz. But, there is no harm using the commercial stuff either, its just more expensive. I have heard that the PRE stuff from Eastwood works well too.

i have a few

1-make sure the car is nice and hot before you start to spray, and your booth
2-need a clean booth
3- clean off all wax and grease
4-use good primer
5- leave enough time in between coats to dry or you will get solvent pop

............................. could go on for days.but its pretty simple   !nanr

Here's a great tip to making sure all the parts you hang will go back on with little effort and time.
When hanging the doors, after you get both doors hung and they shut nice, lock, and everything is fine, take an 1/8"drill and drill a hole in the hinge before you take the doors off. Then when you are back from paint, all you do to hang them is lining up the 1/8th inch hole in the hinge with the back of the drill for alignment and tighten the bolts. Now I would take the time to tape all the edges around the doors, just for precaution, but I have used this method before disassembly on most all parts that have to be aligned.....doors, trunk lids, and hoods. It works great and saves lots of time and less chance of nicking expensive paint.
