Years in Drag Racing
« on: February 23, 2008, 09:20:54 PM »

Just a thought, how long have you been into drag racing,  4 speed I know my dad started about 40 years ago, although he quit for a while. I've been really into it for 15 years out of my almost 21 years.
I was just thinkin about what I've seen over the years, the first race car I saw was the Ranchero my dad had when my parents first got together, he blew it up before I could see him race it. He got smart and sold it, bought a 66 Belvedere and put a 440 in it and was running mid to low 13's, and finally bought his dart out of a junk yard around '95, and you've seen the current end product of that. I got my first car when I was about 9, it was a 68 Dart GT, we stripped it and then it sat in our back yard(s) until I was 16, and we sold it for about 10 times what we paid for it, my current car I got from my sister when I was about 15, 68 Dart Sport Special, had a /6 with a 3 speed on the column, we've since stripped it and dropped a 340 in it, I'm about to backhalf it and put a big block in it.

I used to street race back in the mid 80's and occasionally go to the track to watch. I made my first pass at a track in 1990.

my first race was in my truck I ran 18's, in 2003, I got my first and only win was later that year, my car wasn't done yet, so I ran my mom's for 2 races, I was running 11.60's and I knew the car like the back of my hand, I was used to it, just not used to driving the car yet, the first round, just before I ran they let a top alcohol dragster make a test run, and he scattered his brand new keith black Hemi all over the track, that took almost an hour to clean up. then later that night, a guy who was preparing for the divisional race later that month, had taken his wing of the back of his 8 second vette, got air under the back of his car and lost control at about 130mph, took out part of the guard rail, they forund a front tire about 150 yards away, replaced the guard rail with some "Jersey barriers", I finally got to run the final round around 2am, against a guy I had raced many times before, and usually lost to, but he got a red light, and I haven't done worth a hoot since

I started racing waaaay back in '64. When I was 18 years young.  Out at Great Bend Motorplex. Things were way different then. I had a '55 Chevy post car with a 283 auto. Ran mid 13s. That was a darned good run then.  Got a picture but the scanner is  puke      The place was packed every Sunday. Cars and spectators.   Still race there, but things are little different.  Not as many spectators....[Kids nowadays have their video games.]   Cars are faster, More money spent, and Lots more regulations.   But it still a great Family sport.  Oh yeah - and the biggest change.... I now drive a  bbd sign.

I had been reading about all of my drag racing hero's since the early 60's, but started drag racing myself in the early 70's and retired at the end of the 1997 season.

I started racing the weekend after i turned 16 and got my license, driving a slant 6 75 Scamp, runner'd up first time out.  I'm 31 now, and race every weekend through the summer, and have 3 track championships to my credit, as well as 4 top 5 finishes.   My dad has been racing since he was 16 as well, so i'm pretty sure thats where i get it from. He's also a multi - multi time track champ, most recently in 2006, with runner up last year.  Its a way of life in our family.   Cool

First time I ran down the track was in 1976 in my 273 Dart.  It was a 66 Dart 4-speed and it ran high 14's.  Been at it off and on ever since.  Ron
