Hi my standard Valiant rim has a Center Bore Diameter of 2.9 inches and is hub centirc with conical seat lug nuts. Can I safely fit a Center Bore Diameter of 3.3 inches with the correct conical lug nuts to suit the new wheel, does it matter that it is not hub centric when you use conical seat lug nuts. Anyone used a steel wheel with a Center Bore Diameter of 3.3 inches and 5 x 4 1/2 inch PCD.

I redrilled my small bolt pattern axles, and am using stock type large bolt pattern wheels which have the larger centre. I haven't had any problems yet, but I did notice something else. The large bolt pattern wheels have a raised ring at the hub and another raised ring outboard of the lugs that forms the contact for the wheel against the brake drum. The outer ring is slightly larger in diameter than the flat area on a small bolt pattern drum, so therefore the wheel is not fully supported. I am planning on making some aluminum spacers which will be larger diameter to support the outer ring on the rim and also to incorporate a step to take up the space between the wheel centre and the axle hub.

I had an old beater truck years ago. I beat the crap out of that thing, hauled heavy loads, towed a boat. A few of the rims had center holes which were larger than the hub on the axle. Never had any problems. I think this is what you're asking?...

Think of it this way - only the OEM's use center-hub supported rims. All aftermarket brake systems, and all aftermarket rims are lug-centered, with the only concern being that the hubs be small enough and the rims be big enough that they'll all fit over each other regardless of brand.

Those who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those of us who are doing it.

I design my brake kits to be hub centric with Mustang rims.
