hood scoop progress NEW PICS

I patched the hood from my old fabricated scoop experiment and bought myself an XL hemi scoop from AAR. Didn't really need the height but I needed the extra width with the MW cross ram.

Scrapped the 14" unsilenced Mopar air cleaners for the 10" chrome filters. Welded nipples for the breathers. And with stage III instructions. 

The block is jamesdart Candy Apple Rust. 

Glassed in a flange around the hood openings.


Glassed in 3/4" x 1/8" aluminum flat bar at the front of the scoop. Jailbars are 3/8" aluminum bar stock tapped for 1/4" NC stainless hardware.


Glassed in 1" x 1/8" aluminum flat bar along the underside of the hood scoop flange.


Ordered some 4" foam today and will make a pan to seal the carbs to the hood. With the 3/4" raised base air cleaners, the pan will sit on the carbs. I'm thinking two round 16" pans welded together in the overlap area.

This is the Extra Large Hemi scoop from AAR. Overkill as usual but this scoop should be plenty sturdy. The hood also has 5 pins; 3 at the radiator support and two at the firewall.

Thanks guys. I've glassed before but it has been about 10 years. I applied 3 layers of fabric. Getting the air bubbles out was a learning curve but i got it. Have lots of hours in it, but I'm glad I have the support under there. Very solid. The scoop is 5" x 35" at the opening, so the 493 will be getting plenty of fresh air. Mock up will be done by the end of this summer.

If someone decides to install flat bar, you must place resun under the bar first and let it set up. This will eliminate air bubbles from between the bar and the hood. Next day you can glass it in.

As always tom great looking work! I know that if you fooled with it long enough you would get it right ,and it looks good to me. One day when you are planning a vacation in middle tennessee, we will get my 67 dart finished. Well for that matter started.

I had to fill in a 3" area on the passenger side hole. I tigged a piece of aluminum to the underside reinforcement. I glassed it all in and it looks good and is smoothed in.

 I have burned all evidence of that fabricated scoop I made. I took the gelcoat back an inch to tie it in properly. A friend is going to trade me some of my welding for painting the hood.


Even with the 10" air cleaners I only have 3/8" clearence to the inside flange of the hood scoop. The max wedge cross ram is extremely wide.

That's no problem. The chain is sure to get tangled in that box with wheels that will be behind me when I am already through the traps.

When he is trying to grab a gear, the locker in my Dart will be hooked. His 6 speed won't shift like a torqueflite.

The loser gets to do yard work for the winner. It should be ready to go by this time next year.

My hood foam showed up yesterday and I'll get the tray built this weekend.

That looks great.  I wasn't a fan of the aluminum one you made before but this one looks awesome.  I have a question for you.  Will the aluminum cause any problems with heating up and expanding?  I'm not sure if it's even a problem, just curious.

The coefficient of expansion of aluminum is 0.0001144. The expansion rate of fiberglass is 92% of aluminum meaning aluminum shows more thermal expansion.

Lets use an underhood temperature of 250 degrees F. I had to google that one for an example.

Ambient temperature will be now in the shop 70 degrees F

The longest piece of aluminum is 34" 

0.0000113 x delta T (180 degrees F) x 32" = 0.072" which = 1.15 16ths of an inch

The fiberglass at 34" would grow 1.06 16ths of an inch for a difference in 0.09 16ths of an inch or 5.4 thousands of an inch between the fiberglass and aluminum

Very nice work.Where did you get those pins or bars from the front of the scoop to the hood to keep the scoop from flexing or cracking at high speeds.Any info would be a big help.  Moparchop.

It's kind of funny that you will talk trash with your Mopar buds backing you here. Why don't you tell them the results from the MOPARTS HORSEPOWER calculator when we put in your engine info in and compared it to my numbers. If I remeber right the wedge came up a bit short.
This just proves a point that you should have built a HEMI to go head to head with my SOHC HEMI. (Dude you have enough money, JUST GO AND BUY A HEMI BLOCK!!!)
By the way Tom, I had a Paulander Salvador this evening and have to say it was very good of you to recommend it. Man it was smooth!

I'm only stroked to 483 cid. Remeber, where your engine is at max rpm mine is just getting into its happy place. Guess that's why Ford is back into overhead cam engines. If I remeber right didn't Chrysler experiment with an overhead cam prototype head for the hemi after the Cammer came out?

I believe your right, i think nascar put a stop to all that happy horse sh-- and just banned everything though, isn't that why there is so few cammer engines out there? i don't think you should be so quick to under estimate a cross ram wedge pushrod engine, after all fords new cammer engines get there asses handed to em by GM's pushrod LS engines.
