Slick compound

What's the suggestion on compounds for slicks, I know my dad used to run D5 when he ran Good years, and it's pretty universal for most of the people I've talked to about tires to use that compound, but what does the other compounds do, like the D1, or D4, etc. I know they are softer, but what do they do

I'm putting 32X14's on mine when it's built, that's what my dad's running, he used to run goodyears but found out hoosiers work better on his, I was wondering if maybe a different compound might work with the goodyears on his
