i inherited a '98 mercury sable wagon from my dad when he died. i was wondering if it could be used to very ocasionally tow a car and trailer. my trucks dead, and although i don't really enjoy the wagon, i like the mileage. thinking the back end would have to be beefed up? air shocks or something adjustable. it's a v6 car.

we used to use our '67 Coronet to tow the '66 Belvedere to the track back in the day, it had a stock suspension with air shocks, but it also had a big block in it

Check with U-haul, they hava guide that tells them what each car can tow and what is needed to do it.

Tow it probably......stopping it is another question. Does the trailer have electric brakes??

my guess is no ... the car is not rated to tow that much weight, let alone control it in an emeregency stop or swerve ...

according to edmunds the 1998 mercury sable has a towing capacity of 1250 lbs .... your trailer probaly weighs that much ... so now add a 3000 lb car and you wil be @ 4250lbs ... 3.5 times the towing capacity of the car

Towing another car and a trailer with a 98 Sable? Terrible idea. Unsafe. Irresponsible. But yes I would try it if I was really in a jam. That's what the horn is for.

A long time ago a buddy and I agreed to help a friend move back to NY from Chicago. Her parents insisted we take their new car to go get her. We picked up their two week old Taurus or Sable ( it was one of them, can't remember which) and headed out. We got to Chicago, stopped by U Haul, got a receiver hitch installed, rented a small enclosed trailer, packed up and hit the road. It was pouring when we left. Whenever we went over a dip in the road, the tongue weight from the trailer would unload the front tires and cause them to break loose.

thanks guys. i think i'll give this up for a bad idea. if my race car ever sells i told the wife i was taking $500-1000 and buying a truck. thought i'd buy down south. i keep checking the for sale ads on sweptline.org. even if i buuy a shell, i have enoughparts to put a couple small blocks together, and a solid tranny. i'm not good at body work, but can make it look presentable at least. a 50 footer. glad i have somewhere to come and ask when my brain shoots these strange ideas out. what can i say it's been a long winter.
