fuel cell in trunk
« on: March 02, 2008, 06:25:59 PM »

I cut the hole for the fuel cell, going to have new mounting taps welded. Just looking for some input on the location of the cell. Do you think it is too close to the rear of the car. I can move forward about 1 1/2". The sump out let are close the end of the car. This car will see some street action, just worried about getting hit from behind.

I dont think the position of you cell is "ideal"............mine sits about 8" forward of yours.  Did you box it in w/ tubing or are you gonna mount it with the tabs?

Are the fuel llines gonna be exposed from behind the car??  Hard to tell from the pics

It will be boxed in with 1" square tubbing. The line will be about 5" back from the end of the car. Someone else suggest to up a extra bar between the ends of the roll cage for safety.

Running a cage bar across the back of the cell is a good idea.  I think the cell will be fine........I have no clue if any track tech inspectors will have a problem with it though, if that's in the plan for the car.  I doubt they will

I was thinking about doing the same thing but I am concerned about actually sealing off the sump from underneath the car. It seems like I would need more room inside the dropped area to enclose all that. What are you doing about this?

If I enclose around the boxing below the trunk will that be ok? What are the rules on fuel cells? What gauge should the enclosure be made of?

I dont know if enclosing around an aluminum fuel cell is required........my brother's nova has an aluminum cell hangin down and it was fine for years at the dragstrip.

My fuel cell hangs down as well.  My car will not be for the drag, but am considering doing a belly pan to cover it

I found this after a quick search online:

Quote
1:5 FUEL SYSTEMS
Location: All fuel tanks, lines, pumps, valves, etc. must be outside
of the driver’s compartment and within the confines of the frame
and/or steel body. Cool cans, fuel-distribution blocks, etc. must be
located at least 6 inches forward of the flywheel/bellhousing area
on rear-wheel-drive (RWD) cars, and on opposite side of
flywheel/bellhousing area on front-wheel-drive (FWD) cars. Fuelpressure-
gauge isolators, with steel-braided line, may be mounted
on firewall.
Tanks: When permitted by class regulations, fuel tanks located
outside body and/or frame must be enclosed in a steel tube frame
constructed of minimum 1 1/4-inch O.D. x .065-inch chrome moly
or .118-inch mild-steel tubing. All fuel tanks must be isolated from
the driver’s compartment by a firewall, completely sealed to
prevent any fuel from entering the driver’s compartment. All fuel
tanks must have a pressure cap and be vented outside of car
body. A positive-locking screw-on fuel-tank cap is mandatory on all
cars. Insulated fuel tanks prohibited. When used, fuel cells must
have a metal box protecting the part of the fuel cell that is outside
of body lines or trunk floor, excluding hose-connection area in rear.
Non-metallic fuel cells or tanks must be grounded to frame.

This is where I got it.

http://www.nhrasportcompact.com/2006/rules/GeneralRegulations.pdf

I was pretty sure all fuel cells needed to be covered.  .024 sheet metal isn't tookard to work with though.  If nothin else, just bend somthing up and pop rivet it in.
