wheel backspacing question
« on: March 19, 2008, 10:54:12 PM »

I'm looking at getting wheels for my car. Basically I'm just trying to figure out where backspacing is measured from. I'm asuming its from the outside edge of the wheel but i don't know.  hammer I think i want the least amount of back spacing as possible in order to keep the wheel from looking all "dished" in. Is that correct if thats the look im going for? HELP please I'm an amatuer and this is my first car build, im learning as i go. Oh yeah and my rearend width is not an issue becuase im getting one cut to fit.

Stockton Wheel has some very good information on their web site. They show how to measure and make understanding of the wheel back spacing. I used there information to get my wheels made. Stock steel wheels,10 inches wide, with a b body 8 3/4 axle.

What does anyone have to say about a 28 inch tall tire on my 64, will it fit? i was looking at hoosier DOT drag radials 275/60/r15 10in tread, 28in tall, 11.5in total width. Personally i would like a shorter tire so im not driving a 4x4 dart but thats the best option ive been able to find. Any input?  Huh Ohh yeah the car is mini tubbed and springs on the frame, in case you were wondering.

thanks  Dustin

Yeah it should fit.  28" is about the max height though.  If you've got it minitubbed and springs relocated, you may as well go with the 325/50/15, if you've got 10" rims and the backspacing is correct.  That would be very tight, but is definitly possible with the right wheels.  Plus, it looks sweet!

I was actually wanting to go with 315/35r17 but that would only leave me with .7" of clearence on either side. when i did my tub i didnt cut the flange off the frame becuase i didnt know if it would compromise the integrity, so i only have 14 inches. Do you think 315 would fit? What kind of tire is that in your picture? i didnt think i would like the tread look but it looks pretty good on your car.

http://www.americanracing.com/browse_vintage.asp    This is the wheel i was lookin at running but im still undecided. I need to decide soon though, im holding off on getting my rear end untill i know my off set or back-spacing (still a little confusing to me) so i can get the wheels i want with the look i want. (im getting a custom length rear end)

Thanks, Dustin

The tires in the picture are 325/50/15.  And if it were me, .7" is plenty.  Thats damn near 3/4".

And for backspacing, it's basically the distance from the mounting surface of the rim to a straight edge placed against the back lip of the rim.

Anyone have any experience with Hoosier DOT drag radials, or similar tires? Just wondering if they are a pain to maintain. Car is going to be driven on the street often and taken to the strip every once in a while.Im basically looking for no maintnance tires. I mostly just like the look of them. Wet driving conditions are not a factor becuase i live in southern california and dont want my garage queen gettin wet anyways.
