Wheel mounting torque ring
« on: March 21, 2008, 07:44:08 AM »

Does the mounting pad on the wheel have to be a flat surface to mount on the hub properly.
The photo I uploaded shows a black dotted line where the disc rotor is contacting the wheel. Is this normal?.
Any thought as to this being ok. Dunno

wheels shouldn't contact the brakes at any time. i have a 2 piece set of 3/8" spacers if you need them.

Thank you for the reply I said the wrong thing I think, I should have said the black dotted line is where the wheel is contacting the outer edge of the hub, my stock wheels mount on the flat face of the hub. I'm guessing I will need spacers or larger rotors/brakes to get the wheel to mount on top of the mounting pad and on the flat face of the hub. A 1 inch larger dia hub face should work. Has anyone had the same problem with a 17 x 8 aftermarket wheel.

Well I now know that the raised hump on the back is a torque ring  and yes it does need to sit flat against the hub face.  hammer
I can run a spacer as long as the spacer has a diameter large enough to cover the torque ring.
Or I can modify the OD of the hub to eliminate the spacer and stop the  from giving me a hard time, spacers are illegal here.
This torgue ring is common on Stock car racing apparently.  Dunno

Ok now I'm confused ... you are going to bigger whells (17 X 8 ) and the new LARGER wheels are hitting the rotor hubs ? Huh can you get a pic of the back of the wheel you are going to use anda pick if the brake hub/rotor ?  Then it might be easier to see what is goign on

Hi the new wheels are the ones not fitting properly, a 7 inch round x 3/16 thick spacer on the hub should work however this would be illegal here, if no option I will use them.
I may be able to modify the front of the hub to be 1 inch bigger in diameter and still clear the caliper.

In the new photo below you can see the two points the hub and new wheel contact, the wheel should contact on the high part of the torque ring. The new wheels are lug nut centric.

This site explains the torque ring my wheels have the 360 degree type

And this site shows a failed wheel if a spacer is used inside the torque ring.  Shocked

Ok now I get it ... sorry for the  confusion ... you do nto want the torque ring toucing the rotor hub.  Your best bet is to turn down the rotor hub so it fits flush INSIDE the torque ring of the wheel.  You do not want any space between the part where the lug nuts are and the face of the rotor hub.  Do you have 3/8 clearance to the brake rotor with those wheels ?  if not you will have issues once you turn the outer edge of th rotor down and will have to to run a spacer anyhow  or get some different wheels .  keep us posted on your progress  duster

Yes there is 3/8 clearance to the brake rotor however what I have read on those sites I posted a link to says not to run on the inside of the torque ring as wheel failure will happen.
There is an inner torque ring also which is the same height as the outer so even if I was to reduce the hub diameter it still would not sit flat on the hub face.
I will investigate some more and get back, at this stage similar wheel manufacturers like Aero and Bassett which have torgue rings suggest to run a min 7 inch diameter spacer and bolt this to the hub face. Link here. http://www.circletrack.com/techarticles/ctrp_0605_race_wheel_manufacturer_q_a/wheel_spacing_bent_rims.html
''9. Does wheel spacing off the hub affect the strength of the wheel and its life span?''

 thank you

I have a similar issue with the outer ring on my stock ramcharger rims being larger than the flat area on the stock small bolt pattern drums.  I am fabbing a wheel spacer to give it more support.
