coil over conversion question
« on: March 27, 2008, 10:44:34 PM »

instead of useing coil over shocks with adapter on the top stud and needing to reinforce the shock tower, why could you not use the same coil overs that the altercation system uses and mount a similar bracket like the altercation that would fasten straight to the frame in the same location as the one on the altercation? Tom.

The alterk frame works because the loads are transferred into the square frame. In addition, loads are minimized because the same structure that supports the shock also contains the lower control arm mount - it makes a drastic difference in how the load is applied to the car body.
Simply welding a new tower onto the side of the frame rail will still cause the 1200lbs per side to act on the frame rail of the car.  The issue isn't so much that the oem shock tower will tear off, it's that the weight on it will eventually twist the frame rail inward at the top, slowly closing up your hood to fender gap.
In order for us to use an upper mount that's down closer to the frame, we also design the lower control arms to hold the shock lower in the car than stock, so the lower height shock mount can work and still allow a long enough shock to provide sufficient travel.
