its like an ex. its always familiar brings back memorys of the good times and brings up why it didnt work out for more but leaves you unsettled and guilty for not going all the way with it.

Here's my take on primer ... I think cars have a certain appeal when they are in an unfinished state. Tends to get ones imagination going. Makes you wonder how it will look when it's all done what color ETC. Also probably everyone here can remember some hairy ride from their youth in a car that had primer spots and no hood cause ya just cranked that new engine and your going for that first drive ! When cars are over restored all nice and shiney they look like less fun(to Me) cause you know if you were driving it you'd be worried bout every little bump or scratch. I've had a couple cars now that never got painted only primered . But the primer was so easy to touch up with a spray can

I agree with both of you guys. a buddy of ours had his car primered for a while, I loved the way it looked (71 Dart) it is now plum crazy purple with flames, I think it looks good the way it is, but the way it looked primered was just ............... can't think of a work to describe it, but I liked it. Now he has to worry about it getting scratched or dinged, I guess that's why I'm having trouble with getting mine started on the paint side.

Primer means that the drivetrain is more important than looking pretty.

When my Charger was in primer I was always looking forward to painting it. Once I painted it yellow, it stood out like a sore thumb, everyone recognized it the moment I pulled in anywhere, so I never got any races and cops recognized it instantly. That car looked tough in primer.

I suggest it's something more........primitive. Has a lot to do with sending a message....something along the lines of "Looks ain't important so much has how well it does the job"
Then again, it could very well be a throwback to the 40's, when our boys came home from WW2, built a model A from whatever Gramps would let him have out of the back 40, and put what little money he had into making it light and fast, not pretty.

My car is flat black and I did it all based up the idea that how its runs ( Money in HP, not paint ). Also to me there's something mean about it . Here in my hometown Shelbyville, TN there's a old 70'y something Chevelle that roams the streets every Sat night looking for a fight, its red primer looks like shit but from the way it sounds will put a up a fight.

Back in the early 70's we were at Budds Creek, now Maryland International Raceway. One of the Pro racers had a new car and it was still in primer. When we asked why, we were told that the pourus surface of the primer grabbed a layer of air creating a dead air space. This dead air space was actually slipperier than paint, making the car a little faster. By the next weekend half our cars were in red oxide. I think the car was rushed to make the race being a points meet. But, we were kids and we believed, Joe.

i told a kid in tech school about ten years ago that my dart use to be a former drag car and had some of the rollcage left when he asked what the gas tank fill tube in the trunk was....

with all of ur opinions. the look of any color primer is a sign of work in progress. although the yellow tinted primer or sealer is my fav. "im not ready for paint cuz my money is wrapped up in go fast chevy ass kickin parts". i ve had few in primer. namely a 70 nova w/ a 450 horse small block. it just seemed quicker to me when it was red oxide. painted it canary yellow and it lost its appeal to me. it also had alum. slots. when i painted it i also went with wleds,15x3's in front and 15x8 in rear with 275/60/15 hoosiers. it was quick as hell but it wasnt a and it seemed more finished.
