so far I've dismantled stuff, taken the doors off and sanded parts of the post to expose the beads holding it in place.

some more shots of places holding the post in place...

the other pictures are of the process of making templates for lengthening the front doors to two door length.

continuation of the template making for the doors. was thinking of getting creative with the quarter panel area since I'm fabricating stuff. was thinking of an arrow type thing.... lol like a dart. Dart= quick, fast moving object. "like a dart" .... meh don't know if ill go with this though. I'm afraid of it looking stupid or the body lines not flowing in one direction... like a dart lol. I made a sketch of the car that i canl post to give better illustration... probably just go with a straight line down like the old 40's and 50's cars i like that look... looks simple Smiley

Looks like you have a great strting point.   I am a little concerned about stretching the doors, what is your plan for the windows and regulators ?  You will neeed the drivers window to be functional so you can pull the bag o bigmacs in when your in the drive through.   Keep the pics flowing ...

How did u determine how much to stretch the current doors for the conversion?  Did you measure the doors from a 2 door, or already have them somewhere?

Keep it up!

may i ask what was the motivation for taking on this job instead of buying a 2 door?

i always wanted a 2 door but didn't have the money to buy one since they are usually in the thousand "dollars" range. i've got a challenger im trying to find parts for to turn it into a 4 speed O.D. car, as well as needing body work, and a cuda thats a rusted basket case. as u all know those two cars are very expensive to get things for which held my pockets when it came to gettin a 67-69 dart to complete my dream team. however a friend of mine who worked at kragen told me he had a 4 door 68 dart he was trying to get rid of for $500 bucks. my girl friend all of a sudden  copycat became a mopar lover for darts and wanted it. i told her id get it running and what not so she got it. some months later i found another 4 door for the same price and was going to get it because when i inspected her car i realized the post was not apart of the car, but welded in. knowing the girlfriend wouldn't dare let me tear into her car, i wanted my own. so when i told her i was going to get the new dart she freaked worried that i was making an irresponsible decision based on my funds  cat fight. so she decided to share her car with me. she realized how much i was hurtin when she of all people and not me got a 68 dart 270  ! she even told me that if i got her a jetta, rabbit, some kind of small car that she could drive now, shed let me have the car!

so in a nut shell my inspiration for a two door was convinence and funds... funny thing i didn't even know that there was a difference between 2 door post and 2 door hard top till i decided to take on this project! i thought they were just different ways of saying the same thing. but i noticed the roof line was different between a sedan and hard top when i started looking for doors lol.

there you have it! hope i didn't bore anyone lol

on a two door car the quarter panles are 86" long for 67-69 darts. so i used that as a guide line, however the door jam area is curved so instead of trying to copy that i just got creative and decide to make my own body line because im getting skeptical about finding some doors off of a sedan meaning im gonna have to try and make my own. meh we'll se how it turns out lol

picture of the sketch i made with my door line. i think i may not go with this and just go with a straight line down.... like the simpler earlier 40's and 50's doors. does it look dumb??? im worried the body lines don't flow well. picture was really big so i had to scan it in in pices and put it together in adobe photoshop.

the problem wit hthe door not being straight is that the window can not roll down into the door  ...  I still think you need ot find a set of 2 door door hard top or sedan ... they  will save you hours of fabrication ...

ive always had the idea also of taking a 2nd roof from another dart then butting it up so the window meets the tail lights and making the stock window a hatch type opening like the old chevelle wagons where the door part folds under......

easier... of course not. cheaper... id say so. not to many 68 2 door sedan or hardtops around here and the ones i do find they're out of my pocket range... 14k, 3500, blah blah blah or if i do find one fo a grand or 2 its no where near me... so how much to get the car to where i am??? more $$$$

but all in all im doin it for the experience. its fun, its hard, and when im finished i know itll look nice and i can say that i did it  Grin

got one post out heres some pictures of how it looked before, after i took it out, and where it will be afterwards. man was it a pain removing the post... the nex one will go allot faster since i know how to do it. first time i spent alot of time examining and being careful... made a few mistakes though... nothing that cant be fixed though with a little metal work.

to take the post out i simply had to find all the spot welds and drill em out. the spots are at the top of the post and bottom only nothing fancy to my surprise. on the back (not shown in these pictures, but i circled them in green in the earlyer pictures) of the post inside the car there are a few beads that need to be cut at the top and the bottom of the post.

I know this is sort of been mentioned but if I am not mistaken all 67-69 Dart two door post sedans (not hardtop) share the same roof line as the four doors. You should be able to find a 67-69 post sedan and use the doors (there was a set on e-bay and moparts in the last month, they are not impossible to find) off it and cut the front quarters and door post off it and qraft them on.  It would be much easier then what you are doing now and it would have a factory look which would be VERY important for holding its value in the long run.  Any other approach then that I can't encourage anybody to do because of the amount time, equipment, and talent it would take to stretch the doors and quarters to accomplish something with a custom look like your approach and in the long run the resale value would be ruined.  If you don't use the factory pieces like I mentioned what are you going to do for glass? You cannot have curved glass custom made unless you have a small fortune to spend just on that alone.   Regardless of the conversion you started with a really clean car that alot of guys including myself would like to have.

I've been checking ebay for a while now and i haven't seen any doors... i must have missed em. and i totally agree with everything your saying, but I'm not interested in resale value... my cars are mine to stay  Grin however if i can get some doors and quarter pieces ill be really happy because it'll be that much easier.   as for the v shaped door... i've chosen to go with a straight line down, that way if i do use my stretched doors... ill be able to install the window actuators and glass.

no room for another car... my drive way is at its max with 3 cars and room to work around the cars... and i cant get rid of the car, its my gf's first car ever so shes emotionally attached and what not... if i had asked her to sell it to get a 2 door, i would hear the end of it  Blah Blah Blah ! but yet shell let me have it if i get her a smaller running car. go figure. i guess its the thought that if i have it then shell know that its in safe hands and she can use it when ever she wants  Dunno

anywho thanks for the luck. here's an update on my progress. i got the other post out and took up the carpet and roof lining because stupid me didn't ever check the floors and stuff when she got the car. what i found was cool i guess. no holes! but there is some surface rust.

i cut the rear door skin and heres a picture of what the new quarter panel piece looks like. The first picture shows the small section cut off from the rear door skin matched up to the front door skin. alls i did to get the skin off of the front door, was drill the spot welds out. the interior part of the door will be cut in half to make longer then reattached to the new door skin.

notice the difference between the rear door skins
