I did gap the tub for somewhat of a root pass. I just drag the root with some heat. For the second pass I turn the heat down and give it a little weave. When running wire uphill, I weave from side to side overlapping the previous puddle by 25 - 50%. Pause on the sides flashing the puddle into the base metal then drag to the other side. Do not spend much time in the middle. It will take care of it self. You get a rythm in your head; one thousand one one thousand two; each second is a sweep. When the weld is horizontal, pause longer at the top of the bead and just touch the bottom. This helps prevent undercut of top of the bead. Same applies to electrodes, oxyfuel, tig When tigging, the same puddle walk applies when walking the cup, except I find the pause to be less with Tig. Outriggers and side bars next weekend.

Looking good ... so when you coming east to weld mine up for me ? Tom, I'm about 40 miles south of you. I'll get my welder warmed up for you!! Seeing your work makes we want to grind all my welds down, clean everything, practice, practice and start over. Work like yours is what makes me think I am cutting corners or doing things half-a$$ when it's clearly not my intent.

Andy: I made these boxes to go under the main hoop 6" x 6" plates. Kind of like half an outrigger. Here are some pics to give you an idea. The front of the roll bar (under the dash)is on top of the torque box so no outrigger necessary.

Thanks guys. I need a rotiserrie. Welding under the car and being large is a little awckward. Stay tuned to my stainless X pipe made from 4 pieces of pipe, no elbows and looks like an X. Burns Stainless wants over $300. Ouch

US Cartool sells a rotissierie kit that you supply the steel. It's like 300 bucks. I may get that one.
BTW, weldin' the chocolate star shut would be bad.

Keep watching craigslist and the traders in your area. I found a rotisserie a guy had for sale locally and got it for $850. He pretty much copied an Auto Twirler and it's at least as good as what they sell. The guy works in maintenance at a Cummins plant and it's a work of art. He was getting out of auto restoration (side business for him). I was happy to give him what he was asking.

I found a drawing for one on . Got a quote for tube steel at about $250. I'll build one when I get some time. At least the car is now stucturally sound with connectors, torque boxes and roll bar. It's ready to spin. The car goes on the rotisserie after mock up this August and off to the paint shop.

Nice Tom. I was thinking about doing that, but have not gotten around to it. I am not that exciting about doing more welding under the car. Still having flashbacks to the wheel tubs... . Looks great.
