Build a center link?
« on: April 01, 2008, 02:19:46 PM »

I've had some real problems finding an early A body V8 center link; and when i have found them (3); I get outbid because they go way over 100 bucks for them. (I have 100 bucks, but it's the principal of the matter) Then  I got to thinking; it doesn't seem too far fetched to modify my /6 center link. Has anyone done this?

The critical thing is that the idler and pitman arms need to be parallel at center. I don't know if I'd trust my steering to a welded part.

I just sold one on ebay for just barely over $100.  I would definitely hunt down a stock one, last thing you would want to do is have a steering component fail.

I found one at Wildcat; but he wants $150 for it. I hate getting screwed on parts. It's a "principal" thing. If it was a Chevy part; it'd go for 30 bucks. It's all part of being a Mopar enthusiast I guess. "Bend over"   Whew

$100 would be the max I'd pay also Ken.  I'll keep on the look out for you.  I got lucky and bought mine for $75 last year and it's even powder coated.

Hell, I even saw a factory V-8 65 dart at pick-n-pull a couple years ago.  At the time I didn't know about the centerlinks, or else I would have taken it.  I'm still kicking myself over that one.

Thanks Evan. Hey; I scored that K frame you led me to on Ebay. Not bad for 100 bucks. It's finally starting to get warmer up here so I can get back to workin on the Dart.

Nothing to it. Just make sure that you use the same diameter mild steel rod. Clamp it to the bottom of the original centerlink. Heat the ends so you can bend the correct shape where the centerlink kicks up at the idler arm and pitman arm areas. Let everything cool naturally. Clean, clean, clean the area that the welds will be made. Tig or mig the new piece in. Cut out the center of the old center link. Dress everything up so there are no sharp edges.
