yea just as long as its not to windy and u mask things off and ya dont have bad mosquitos everything usually goes well. unless you put ur finger too far out on the but and paint gathers on it then it drips on ur otherwaise perfect paintjob. i hate that shit. but i think im just ognna do primer as far as $$ is concerned. the body lines pop out more with primer. im not sure why

I wouldnt rattle can a paint job on any car........... Maaco is a better option, if you do prep work and disassembly yourself.

Back in the 70's a local guy did a trick multi color geometric style job on his Camero and it was fantastic. He won best paint at shows. I painted a small John Deere I restored and I don't have the patience. It can be done well but, I wouldn't do it, Joe.

I have a pal, local, that got his car in Hot Rod magazine with a rattle can paint job. He was asked by them 'when he was going to paint it.' His reply was "...it was painted!" He calls it "Stealth" paint as it is purely flat primer black. He says if it gets scratched in a parking lot he just touches it up and sands it out. No big deal. Ya can't do that with real car paint! I have to agree with him on that. I get scratched I flip out. He just shrugs his shoulder and gets another can of primer. I gotta get primer, color, reducer, fish eye, etc. Some how I think he's ahead...

I rattle canned an engine compartment once. Actually turned out pretty good. Car was a tawny golc 71 gtx that the previous owner had painted the engine compartment like a flat red(?). Even had the shortblock in when i painted it. Went to an auto paint shop and they mixed and loaded paint into spray cans. Paint even matched incredibly well.

73 Dartsport: I read in your other thread that you were doing a "complete resto." I think you may be expecting too much from rattle cans. If you want cheap, strip it down and prep it, then take it to Maaco.

Well. if you're happy with that, then I'm happy for ya! Your car, your money, your choices....
Though I HAVE to say, it IS the first "pinto" duster I've ever seen - and if I never see another, it'll be just fine.

its a Dart Sport. and i havnt got to the roof yet its been raining lately. i still need 1/4 panels and when its done it should look pretty good. the only reason the car looks bad is cuz the 1/4s rusted off. when cars sit 14 years theres gonna need to be work done

In all seriousness, its not the can, its the paint. There is nothing wrong with a laquer paint if you want cheap, dont expect it to be shiney. The paint you find in Duplicolor cans is touchup paint, it won't hold up more than a few months in the sun or any weather. Priming your car with spray cans is OK, again, its all prep, if you clean it well, then it will stick, BUT, do not let the primer get wet, or it will soak up moinsture, and anything you put down on top of it will bubble.
There are cheap options.
1. Take it to Macco for a cheap $200-$300 paint job, its not great paint, but its much better than spray can stuff. If you remove all the trim, bumpers, etc, it will turn out pretty good, especially if you stick with non-metallic primary colors, stay away from black or very dark colors. I had a buddy that built a Ford Fiesta with a Formula 2000 race engine, he stripped the car down, had them spray it for $199 a light bright yellow, and this became his daily driver. That paint lasted for 5 years, until a buddy wrecked it one night drinking.
2. Spray it yourself. Do you have an air compressor? Pick up an EVO LVLP gun for $75, a dessicant snake for $20, then buy some paint. You can get single stage urethane from Eastwood for about $90 per sprayable gallon, if you get their epoxy primer for another $80, thats all you will need. Another option is Duplicolor Paint SHop series paint, its $20 per quart pre-mixed. You will need about 3 quarts each of Primer, paint, and clear, so its about $180. Last option is how I bought my paint. I know a guy who owns a paint shop and buys up inventory from shops that are closing, when he does, he takes the paint to local swap meets and sells complete kits, paint, reducer, hardener, clear, etc. His kits range from $100 to $220. I bought my paint through him, its real PPG base black and a fresh gallon of Matrix clear.
3. rattle can it gray or black primer and keep it that way, just remember that it will not protect the metal under from rusting, it absorbs moisture.

flyboy just gave you a great layout of your options, if you're wanting to keep the price down, which I understand, that's the way we've painted most of our cars, as cheap as we could, and still make it look decent. We painted our cars by ourselves, actually my dad did it himself, he used a good compressor, and a gun that cost him about $50 15 years ago, and got the paint at local swap meets, he has been pretty darn satisfied woth the jobs, mainly becaues he did it. We took his car to a friend to paint it 2 years ago, working with the same products, and he didn't take the same care into it, and it turned out crappy. Maaco sounds like a good way to go for you if you don't have a background with painting really, you can get the car prepped, then take it to maaco and they'll lay down a decent top coat, and your car'll turn out alright. I just think you should keep the rattle cans to smaller projects, like the interior, and the like, we've painted all of our interiors with rattle cans, and they look alright, and being the interior, you'll need to touch up regularly if it's a race car. that's why it's good to use rattle cans on the interior.

There is a bunch of posts about rolling on paint on moparts. Lots of pictures, some nice paint jobs. Cost about 100 bucks but its time consuming. I have't tried it but I may this summer. there is also some web sites about it too. go to a search engine and search for roll on paint. or something like that. I'll have to say wehn I ran across the idea I thought...yeah right.....but after reading a bunch of them and seeing some pictures it sure peaked my interest.

hate to say it but i've thought about it in the past as well... but then i just think to myself that it would probably just be worth it to get a gun (since i already have an air compressor) and spray it myself...
