Here is my site on one type of budget paint job: http://www.rollyourcar.comIt uses a roller. I did use a Harbor freight refillable rattlecan to paint the engine compartment though, since the color I wanted wasn't available in spray.

You really can't do any worse than painting it with a spray can. But realize that its not the can thats the issue, its the paint. Unactivated paint is soft and will chip and weather poorly. And now that eastwood sell S/S urethane paint for $80 a gallon, there is not reason to use spray cans, they will not cover much, they will clog, they will drip, and the paint wont last. You can paint a car yourself for $200 at home, it just requires some elbow grease.
Assuming you have a compressor already and the car is in primer. If not, add $80 for primer. $75 Paint gun (LVLP) Astro Evo $70 3 qt Urethane S/S $20 1 qt activator $6 1 qt wax/grease remover $10 masking paper $7 good masking tape

You can buy an HVLP gun at Lowe's. I saw some last night, I think one was under 100 bucks. There's no reason to spray can a car.

I just broke out my 30 year old "El Cheapo" detail gun and whipped some Y3 Curious Yella on a pair of Bill's tubular A-arms an hour ago. I use the BASF line called Limco for all my painting needs. It's not priced bad at all for Base/Clear system. My good guns (Sata HVLP's primer and base/clear units) were almost $800.00 when I purchased them. Now you can get a nice HVLP gun for under a $100. This time tomorrow night.....these babies will be holding the Dart up!!

Hot Rod had an article about the roller paint job last year . they did a Falcoon . it looked ok ,but not good . I think they used Rustoleum and a roller. Harbor freight had some good deals on guns . I would use one of those before I used a rattle can . RATTLE CANS ARE FOR RAT RODS, LAWN FURNATURE, AND FARM IMPLAMENTS. have some pride do it right or don,t do it. YOU ARE A LONG WAY AWAY FROM PAINT. PUT A COUPLE OF QUARTERS ON THAT THING.

I'd get some cheap acrylic enamel and paint it outside on a calm day before I'd use spray cans. Like Flyboy said earlier, you aren't getting very good quality of paint in the rattle can. When I was in high school I painted a Monte Carlo outside in late April on a nice calm sunny day and it turned out great. Just some small dust nibs here and there, but they buffed right out. Didn't Bill (owner of ) paint his car in a make shift plastic sheet and 2x4 paint booth?? There's yet another option.

Sorry I get carried away somtimes . Tractor resto's get better paint than when they rolled off the line in most cases . for instance . the gallon of emron that went on an Oliver 88 mydad and I restored. that stuff was big bucks back in the 80's . My point is you can't put the cart befor the horse. he is noware near ready for paint and using primer at this point is just a waste of money ,even if it is cheap. he might as well try to push a chain or rope up a flight of stairs for all the good it will do him.

It's Little Slims Tractor. I would guess that it is for sale as he is a little older and we are not doing the tractor pulls any more. It was a great leaning experience for the kids. We had a 3 or 4 of them over helping out from time to time . They had fun and hopefully learned something in the process. He wants a . He does real well in school and doesn't get into to much trouble. Mama Slim says I spoil him too much. I'd rather have the boys down in the shop learning than just hanging out. You know what they say about idle hands.

Ok so what has to get across is the point of what are your intentions with this particular car are. primer is a fine option for paint but don't expect it to get you there, it won't be a show winner, and it won't last, It's not a great protectant(might as well carry around a sander and have your car bare metal), then theres canned paint thats a whole new beast. theres the cheapy stuff which is a little better then primer and duplicolor which as has been mentioned only lasts a little while. the stuff you get a maaco can be great(my truck has a maaco job that only started flaking because of the rust) but again don't expect a show winner. My 84 ramcharger is my offroad truck. I'm painting it black and fire red tremclad from a can. But again thats an offroad truck and I expect to put dents into it and I'll be rough on the paint so I'm not going to spend a ton on paint. 5 bucks a can and a sanding pad and I can have the paint looking good again. The dart will likely get the duplicolor paintshop paint in white just so I can protect my hard work.
I'm not sure where this attitude comes from about him not getting his car running? I'm not trying to start stuff but I'm pretty sure we've all been there were we don't have time or the thing we need to get something running again that isn't but that's no reason to ride him about it. We've all got projects or had to ask a dumb question before so lets be understanding.

I think the biggest thing we all need to remember is you get what you pay for. If you only spend 100 bucks on paint it's gonna look like it. you spend your money and spend the time to do like flyboy and it'll look amazing.

Yeah i gotta paint the jeep this summer.I'm trying to keep the overall cost down on everything. The wife wanted a Jeep,I wanted a 4wd so i guess we actually agreed on something.I'll be purchasing the base clear along with the primers and what not. It's white now.Looks crappy. It's probably going to go the Tangerine Twist.I'm sure the wife will change our minds several times.

Keep in mind if you dont have a compressor most body supply places can put good paint in a pressurized rattle can. it is more expensive than walmart but you will be happier with the results.
