Nazty68 Roll Cage Update
« on: April 07, 2008, 11:36:56 AM »

Well that is the lic plate that will go on Rickey's car ....when they come in...Anyway we spent Saturday bending up his rollcage.....We need to do the A pillar bars, door bars and the back bar. Rickey really enjoyed getting up between the bars to get to some of those welds...I sure hope this holds.....!!!! Also notice that there are NO burn marks on the head liner....

Here is the final results...I had suggested going thru the dash with the A pillar bars but he didnt want to cut the dash...so this is what we came up with.

looks good rick, and ricky. this is a street car right? looks like the door bars make it hard to get in and out. or maybe i am just getting old and lazy. i would like to install door bars also, but have't talked myself into it.

Jackie,
This car will be 90% street and 10% strip right now. My son is 17 so he will be able to flop in and out of it much easier than I can..Even at 47 I find it harder to bend over stuff like this..lol At one point he wanted to X the door bars but once these were in it...he changed his mind. We still need to add the dash bar....later! We spent the last 2 Saturdays working on the cage. To this point we have approx 22 hours into the cage.

With Sub-frame connectors and depending on the amount of floor altered. You may need to install  'Rocker-panel' bars.

With Sub-frame connectors your going to need 'Roc -0*(ker-panel' bars.

Why is this?

If your talking the bars that connect the sub frame to the rocker panels...they are already there. We used the same material that we used for the frame connectors under the A-pillar bars that are welded to the frame and rocker box.  If there is a difference...what is a Rocker Panel bar..

The rocker bars are the ones that runs from the bottom of the main hoop to the bottom of the front down tube parallel w/ the rocker panel .  It's only mandatory if you have a modified floor.  They do allow 6 square feet for trans tunnel modifications I believe.  But what constitutes a "modified floor"?  I think he's trying to say that since the subframe connectors protrude into the floor, it is now modified and requires a rocker bar.  I'm not sure if that is true or not.  What do others think?

Here is what the rule says

Quote
Unless an O.E.M. frame rail is located below and outside of driver's legs (i.e. '55 Chevy, '65 Corvette, etc.) a rocker or sill bar, minimum 1 5/8-inch (41.2 mm) x .083 (2.1 mm) CM or .118 (3.0 mm) MS or 2-inch x 2-inch x .058-inch (50.8 x 50.8 x 1.5 mm) CM or MS rectangular, is mandatory in any car with a modified floor or rocker box within the roll cage uprights (excluding six square feet of transmission maintenance opening). Rocker bar must be installed below and outside of driver's legs, and must tie into the main hoop, the forward hoop, frame, frame extension or side diagonal. Rocker bar may not tie into swing out side bar support. If rocker bar ties into side diagonal more than 5-inches (127 mm) (edge to edge) from forward roll cage support or main hoop, a 1 5/8-inch (41.2 mm) x .083 (2.1 mm) CM or .118 (3.0 mm) MS brace/gusset is mandatory between the diagonal and forward roll cage support or main hoop

Spent this last Saturday putting the rearend back under the car, and putting the mock up motor and 4 speed back in the car as well. Then spent the next 2 hours pulling the tubing bender and notcher down as well as cleaning the garage so that the beast could come in out of public viewing..Or at least the idiot neighbor...Rickey took some time yesterday and installed the V gate shifter and also he sat his tunnel ram on the motor....dang this thing looks mean..
Now its time to start working on the headers...
