Rear Leaf Sring Offset Shackles Good / Bad / Worth It ?
« on: April 07, 2008, 01:59:21 PM »

I'm currently at the crossroads on my project, I don't want to mini tub, nor do I want to move the leaf springs inboard to the frame rail, was wondering if the offset spring shackles were worth the hassle for only 1/2" more clearance on each side,  would like some input on this.

I've got them on my car. It will be on the road soon, "I hope". With the approx. .75" offset on each side the tires have good clearance at the springs so there should not be any problem there.  We"ll see. Willie

No, I think we were all looking at the avatar, and completely forgetting the question.

I have them on my duster.  I have M/T 275-60-15 drag radials and they fit in really nice.  Have about 1/2" to learf spring.  You might be able to fit the same amount of tire with wheel offset.  Go to a GOOD wheel store.  they will have a tool that will show you how much tire you can fit in.

I think that the 3/4" will get you the ability to get 275/60r15 in there. where right now you are limited to 255/60r15. Not much difference in width, but an advantage in height.

Do your Caltracs still bolt up EZ when using the offset spring shackle kit ?

It was a couple of years ago when I had Bill "AAOUTLAW" do the install. From what I remember, the only little problem was I had to cut the fine thread nut off that was welded on the front spring bracket. That way I could use the coarse thread bolts. From what I've seen the Cal-Trac's fit just fine.  Willie

I have 7/8" offset shackles on my 1968 Dart GT.

They allow me to fit a BFG 255-60R /15 tire on 8" wide Cragar /SS wheel with 5" Offset..

I have a total 12" wheelwell width, with the inner lip rolled up. I have fairly stiff air shocks.

The 255 tire gives me about 7/8" free space on either side of the tire. They rub only when leaning around fast corners.

I think that for a street car, a  275 tire would rub at almost every opportunity..

I have the 7/8 kit on my early a-body.  The rear wheels are Stockton TQs small bolt pattern. I had them widened from 15x5.5 to 15x7.5 the backspacing in now 5 inches. They fit perfect with the 10.5/27/15 Hoosier Pro Street radials. Same as a 255/60/15 basically.
