Ive got a 87 Dakota project that will be eventually getting a turboed big block. Anyways I had been thinking about mounting the leafs under the frame rails with sliders on the rear, but I got wondering about putting them on the inside of the frame rail instead because I dont know if I can get my 4" drop with them under the frame. Do you think this would cause any problems? I will have to use the shackles from the drivers side on the passenger side and will have to box the frame in those areas.
What do you think?
Thanks

I think it could work but the closer the springs are together, the less stability (side to side) they can offer. Also, (on an A body at least) the inside of the frame rails is prime real estate, the fuel tank, rearend and exhaust all need to occupy this area. I imagine the fuel tank is different on the Dak and you could go with side exhaust.

If I use the stock fuel tank it wont work as it mounts on the drivers sire rail but I plan on running a fuel cell so that offers up some space.

Is this a budget build or is the after market rear suspension kits a possibility? Rather then reinvent the wheel, I'd be tempted to go with them, if for nothing else they've already exercized the Demons required to get it into kit form. Can you say 4 link back-half?

Ive thought about it, But I would prefer to stay with leaf springs as it will see alot of street duty and I know absolutely nothing about setting up a 4 link.

i dont think leaf springs would do any good behind a turboed bigblock.... with as much front end weight you'll have i think a 4-link is in your future..

pickups have traction issues with alot less power because of weight distribution, with a turbo'd bigblock and leaf springs I think it's going to be a cool tire smoker but thats all..A 4 link isnt hard to setup at all... Ryan

You guys are probably right but here is a pic of a Big block dakota with a set of A body caltracs and monoleafs mounted under the frame rails. Although mine is a long box so that would probably make a difference. If I was to go with a 4 link whos and what style would you suggest? Complete back halve or stock frame rails?
Thanks

thats a kool dakota for sure.
but if i were going to go through the money of building a big block with a turbo... and then try to save money by, what i would call, half assing the rearend i wouldnt even go to the trouble of building an engine in the first place...
leafsprings can work with caltracs, and also leafs with ladder bars... but why not just go ahead and use coilovers for a couple hundred more bucks?
how much are caltracs nowadays$300.00? mono leafs $200?
4-link=$250-$300 Ladder bars $250 coil-overs = $400.00
thats just me though, if it were my ruck it would be getting ladder bars or 4-link
