Best aftermarket Disc brake setup for street use.
« on: April 12, 2008, 04:44:09 PM »

I want to buy an aftermarket disc brake setup.

My questions are which is the best one in your opinion for the money and what one(s) have a parts that a readily available.

I am putting them on a 69 Dart.

Nothing really fancy just a decent, safe, setup.

I have used Wilwood and SSBC in the past and have Wilwood's on my Demon now..........................I would take Wilwood again in a second over SSBC

RMS is a dealer for Wilwood, fyi

Willwood all round, even the MC. Still cheaper than SSBC.

Wilwood on the dart. Trying Aerospace Componets on the Elky. If the Aero brakes fail. I'm pretty sure I'll hear about it Grin

has anyone used the ECI setup?

I put ECI kits on the front and rear of my '69 Dart. The front kit went on pretty well with only a couple very minor clearance problems. The aluminum hubs supplied were nice and the steel brackets were very sturdy plasma cut deals. I had no fastener fitment issues but did have to touch the steel brackets with a grinder here and there to be just right. The rear kit... I had an 8 3/4 with Yukon axles and green bearings. The brackets and spacers for the caliper that ECI supplied weren't wort a damn. Had a helluva time getting the brackets to fit the housing end studs and then (and this may be due to the non stock axles I was using) could not get the caliper to center on the disc with the supplied spacers. I was on the phone with ECI (would have rather called the IRS) for about three weeks trying to get just the right spacers to work with my setup. After all of that, I did finally get everything to work together nicely, but what a pain. I'd give them a C- for quality and a D for customer service. I hope other people have had better luck than I did. The problem might have been that ECI was just getting into the Mopar market when I purchased their kits. Things may be better now. Caveat Emptor... If I had to do it all over again, which I will with a '64 B body, Wilwood will be my choice

I just put aerospace on my dart. No powdercoat on the calipers or brackets and the rotors are not cut as nice. If you are going to have it in the weather spend the couple of extra bucks and get the wilwoods. One more thing wilwood supplies the rear bearings in there kit for mopars but aerospace doesn't.

I have the ECI front conversion kit still sitting in my basement.  What were the clearance issues on the front? Huh

Did anyone see the Viper front brake kit AR Engineering is makin'? You need 17 inch wheels, but you get nice parts.

If I recall correctly the issues with the front had to do with the area on the bracket where the caliper mounted. the slot in the bracket was either too narrow or not deep enough to allow me to get the caliper bolts lined up with the holes in the bracket. As I mentioned in my previous post, these were very minor issues. So small that I didn't mind picking up the grinder instead of the phone. One other thing that I also remember is to make darn sure you have the preload on the spindle bearing just right BEFORE you put the dust cap on. I hee hawed around a bit in this department and had a helluva time getting the cap off once it was on nicely. One trick I used to ease instillation and removal of the cap was to cut the O ring that seals the cap. I actually removed a small section of the O ring because it fit the hub so tightly that it would not let the air escape from the bearing cavity. with the split (remove a little at a time until you just get the ends of the O ring to touch when you press the dust cap on) air could escape and allow the dust cap to seat fully. Other than those things, I was quite satisfied with ECI's front kit.

In the wildwood kit is there anything else that you need, other than a master cylinder and the hoses.

Or any upgrades that should happen when putting them on?

They come with everything you need. As you said, all you need is the MC and hoses.

ilabodyguy,  Thanks for the reply.  My kit might be a later version, we'll see if there are any issues. Thanks for the heads up on the O-ring trick.  The instructions that came with mine actually mentioned that.

Maybe all my bitchin' on the phone paid off?? I'm sure I wasn't the only dude burnin' up the phone with those cats. I haven't had my hands on anyone else's brake kit so it's really hard for me to say that ECI's gear is much better or worse than the competition. I'm just the kind of guy that really expects things to be right and  play together nicely when I plunk down my money... Hope some of this helps, lemme know if you have any other questions, I'll try to search my cranial archives for the answers.

I haven't tried them but a company in Wash. makes brackets to mount off the shelf calipers and rotors on a variety of mopar spindles.  Check them out at www.scarebird.com

the scarebird kit doesnt convert to the larger bolt circle (5 on 4 1/2 or 5 on 4 3/4) and he doesnt reccommend drilling the lager bolt pattern in the factory drum hub...
