early rust...how to stop it?
« on: April 14, 2008, 03:45:22 PM »

Hey there guys, i was looking for some advice on what to do for a simple rust fix....my buddy has a 02 pontiac that has some surface rust in a few spots and he wants me to help him fiz it before it gets any worse...since I know everyone on here is very helpful, I decided to see what you guys would recomend for this...he was thinking of sanding it down and then repainting, but i was thinking that maybe he should use some rust stopper stuff before he paints it again...if you guys have any advice on how a repair like this should go, please drop a line...thanks thank you

I use phosphoric acid (naval jelly) to eat out the rust.  Remove the loose rust with a wire wheel  on a die grinder and smear the jelly over the rust spots.  Leave there for 20 to 30 minutes, and the remaining rust will have turned black.  Neutralize with water and baking soda mix and blow dry with compressed air.  Then hit it with the wire wheel again.  Repeat if necessary.

Or just could just spot sandblast it and be done with it!!    I use the jelly most of the time.  I don't like cleaning up the sand if I don't have to.

You can buy phosphoric acid at home depot or lowes.  It's by the acetone and thinners.
