Roll cage paint prep

How would you guys clean up minor surface rust on a cage before paint?  Scotchbrite? Steel wool and WD40?

I just used 400 grit 3M Wet-or-Dry sandpaper without oil.  If you use WD-40 and get it into the weld joints you'll play hell getting it all cleaned out of there.  WD-40 is good for causing "fisheyes" in paint.  We used to shoot to kill, anybody that even possessed a can of WD-40 in our paint/body shop when I did paintwork for the local Dodge dealership.

NO WD-40........400grit paper will work, black biscuit disc for the welds if the paper doesnt get all surface rust out of the welds

Those sanding sponges Home Depot sell for doing sanding in the home work well. They contour to round surfaces without leaving finger marks.

I used 400 grit and once that was done I wiped it down with lacquer thinner to get it all clean before the primer was put on...I made sure that the bars were clean before the primer was put on..

Thanks guys.  Looks like 400 grit it is then.  Is it okay to just use a wire wheel around the joints and on the weld?

Yup, just don't hit them with a hard wheel.

Use some body shop Metal Prep and a scotch brite pad after the 400 dry and before you prime. Be sure to use gloves as this is a weak acid solution.
