Who's carpet, who's not carpet
« on: April 17, 2008, 11:48:42 PM »

Who makes a good carpet, molded or other wise, for a 68 Dart. Problems, ideas, what works, what doesn't, what to look for, etc. I've never done carpet before so be gentle. Usually if it didn't come with it, I just lived with it in what ever condition it was. I'm older now and don't like the smells.  Tongue

Ive repeatedly had trouble with Year One carpet, which if i remember right came to my door in a legendary Box.  Both my cuda and my dads 59 Elcamino the carpets faded within 6 months.  My black carpet is now purple, and his gray carpet is pink. Oh and dont let them convince you that A-body carpet will fit in a fastback barracuda like I did....

All the black carpet fades. The original stuff did, too, but not as bad. This is where Lee (lilcuda) might want to chime in as his Barracuda has an original 66 black carpet from another 66 that was wrecked in 1984 with new quality auto carpet in the rear area that I bought at a fabric or upholstery shop at the same time. I'm wondering how all that has held up.

When I ordered 80/20 loop from Legendary it came in a Trim Parts box. There're two pieces, well molded to the floor contours. There's plenty of material around the edges for trimming. Unfold them and lay them out for awhile to relax. A nice sharp razor knife and a pair of scissors are all you need.

Start with the rear piece. Trim a little at a time. I got it all fit and situated with a couple extra inches of material at the edges before final trimming using the sill plates and the small pieces behind the doors.

Shove the front piece up under the heater outlet until the carpet meets the firewall insulation. You may or may not have to remove material at that leading edge. You just want to make sure the heal pad is where you want it. You'll have a pretty good idea that you have it in the right place when the front piece fits over the bench seat humps correctly. On mine, the carpet was too thick to go over the pinch weld at the door sill and still get the sill plates on. I trimmed it right at the pinch weld and it works fine.

Last thing I did after trimming was to take an ice pick and poke a hole at the center of your dimmer switch. Then you can use scissors to cut a hole just large enough to insert the grommet included.

Have fun. Fresh carpet is kinda like new paint. It makes a big difference.

I know carpet fades, but to turn purple and pink 6 months? ...guess it would look good with modtop seat interior lol.  Ill try to get a pic when i get home though.

I got mine from Legendary. It's a little effort to work it in but mine looks fine. The car has been covered alot so there is no fading yet. The only thing I did wrong was I cut out to much material for the center console. I am going to get some similar fabric to make a skirt thar goes around it.

Purple?!?  Roll Eyes PINK!  Shocked  Oh my! I was looking to get it from Year One via reputation only, but it looks like "Trim parts" should be the source.

Anything else?

I wish I could remember where I bought the carpets in my Charger and Trans Am from. They stayed black just fine.

I have dark blue carpet in my 66 Charger from Legendary. They are one of the main suppliers to Year One so why pay the middle mans mark up? The 66 Charger is 23 pieces thats correct 23 and has a big fastback area. Mine has been installed for 8 years now with no fading what so ever. It is the same dark blue color it was 8 years ago. Not saying that it was not a problem for you kudah440  Have you called them to see what they are going to do about it?  I do not work for Legendary or care who they sell there merchandise too. I have just not personally ever have had a problem with anything that I have purchased from them. I have also bought ACC carpet but have not installed it yet so I can not judge there material but there prices are better then Legendary. Dunno

According to the last issue of Mopar Muscle, Summit is using "Trim parts" for their carpet.

I'm guessing it's the manufacturer.

Has anyone tried scotchguarding to help protect against fading? That'll be a high priority with me before installing any carpet (or upholstery) I get.

The carpet in my GTS and Jeff's Dart are both ACC and faded. The only Trim Parts carpet I bought was for my old Polara and never got it installed, but it was blue. We sold it to Miguel in San Jose (everybody here in California knows who Miguel is..... so does everybody on Moparts).
