Has anybody built and used the instrument voltage regulator at this link? http://members.aol.com/moparnuts/modify.htmI just ordered the components to build it as my Dart's fuel guage is not working now. Think the VR blew up when the charging system was cranking out 16.5 volts during my epic journey to trace down all of the electrical gremlins on this car. I ordered enough parts to build 5 of them. |

I have built some similar to the one on Moparts. I just used a 5 volt regulator instead of the adjustable on in the plans. Keep us posted on how it works for you ...

that would be great ,but every guage is different. so you would then need a seperate voltage regualtor for each instrument in the dash  ... just set it to 5 volts and forget it it will be way more accuarate than what was there before .. |

The only guage I am using is the fuel guage so I will adjust it accordingly and fahgetaboutit!!  |

Why not just order a solid state regulator from www.demonivr.com?No affiliation. Just the one I'm going to pop in to last me until I get all the autometer stuff to do my new instrument cluster. |

A number of years ago one of the mag's did one that fit inside the OEM regulator box. The only visable sign was the rivet they used to hold the regulator in place. I built a few of them for cars I had at the time and they worked good. I'd have to look around to see if I still have the diagrams or not. It was super cheap too and the parts were available at Radio Shack. If I remember right it was a single piece like the one shown at the first web site and that was it; extend the leads and install. If anyone has one of my old cars, that's why the gauges aren't giving you problems.  |

Real Time Engineering makes one with surface mount parts and is a drop-in replacement that looks like this:  I soldered the fixed 5V stuff inside my old can.

As a test, I built the simpler version of the regulator, using a 7805 VR and a 10uF cap. Rock solid 4.99 to 5.00 volts ouput from the regulator when tested with a car battery on the workbench. So I rip out the instrument cluster last night, install it, and voila..........same problem with the fuel gauge. Only reads about 3/4 full when the sending unit is in it's highest position. So I pull the sending unit, which is brand new by the way, and ground it to the car. I run a new sending unit wire from the sender to the wiring ouput terminal on the fuel guage and same problem. Tried the original sending unit. Same problem....actually slightly worse....only half a tank when full with that one. I measured the voltage on the sending unit wire when the sender is in the full position and I get 3.95 volts on the wire. Is this correct? Gonna check the input voltage at the instrument cluster connector and see where it is at. This is really starting to PI$$ me off. If Rocky Mountain Dashes website was open for orders, I'd have ordered one this morning and tossed the factory cluster, wiring harness, etc on the scrap pile!!  |

sounds like the level sender still has resistance when in the full position. you could also run the 5 volts to the sender terminal on the fuel guage and see if it reads full or not ...

That's what I thought too, but both the old and the new sending units, test good with ohm-meter. 6 ohm full and 79 ohm empty on the new sender and 9 ohm full and 81 ohm empty on the old unit.
Until RMD is back in full operation, I think I will order an Autometer programmable Fuel gauge and hack it into the dash somewhere for now.
