torsion bar crossmember
« on: April 20, 2008, 02:42:32 AM »

Anyone replaced theirs with a solid piece of steel tubing. My crossmember is all rusted up and the one mount is rusted away so I'm doing a coil over suspension up front so I don't need my torsion bar mounts. Anyone ever done it? I can buy a piece of 2"x3" .083" wall tubing with a 3.5 inch drop crossmember from competition engineering off summit for about 60 bucks but I'm unsure if that would give me enough bend around the trans and clear my floorpans.

If you are switching to coilovers you really wouldn't need to replace it, from a structural standpoint that is. If it were my car I'd take this opportunity to make a nice floor hugging driveshaft loop to replace it with.

But the torsion bar crossmember also is a transmission mount isn't it?

yes it is the tranny mount as well ... the prebent 3X2 cross member is a good idea but i think it may still be to big to fit the tranny ... they also make a round one out of 1 5/8 tubing that might give you more clearance.

Would that be enough support tho for my floors and my trans?

sure,   it is desigend to hold the rear end in place with 4 link or ladder bars ... some floors and the weight of the back of the tranny should be no problem ...

just cut out the rusted crap and torsion bar thingy and weld the correct thickness sheet metal back in and use the stock trans mount. cost a few bucks.
