I picked up some mopar rattle can engine paint from Summit racing, and sprayed my engine block, heads, valvecovers, etc. Needless to say I didn't have enough for a second coat, I was placing an order with Jegs anyway so I ordered 2 cans from them. When they came they were newer looking cans than the one I used from Summit. I tested it and it was the same color so I didn't think anything about it. I started spraying and by the time I looked back.. the new paint had begun to wrinkle, slightly on the valve covers and very bad on parts of the block. Not everywhere but in quite a few spots. Does anyone know what might be causing this, and where do I go from here? I plan to wire wheel/sand down the wrinkled spots and then try again. I am affraid I will get the same result. Should I go back to Summit and order the original paint I started with?? Very frustrating.. Thanks Bryan

Yes, that paint either has to get the second coat within 45 minutes, or you have to wait 10 days and scuff the first coat, or it will wrinkle. Duplicolor does the same thing.

I waited about 3 or so... so you think if I let it sit for a week or so.. then scuff and try it again I should be in good shape?? I hope your right.. that would make me happy.
Anyone else have any suggestions..
Thanks for your help..

if it already wrinkled, you should sand the wrinkled part, then wait 10 days. Actually, if you read the cans, it tells you that. ![\/][](http://www.bigblockdart.com/Smileys/classic/finger020.gif)

my guess is the new paint is lacquer and the old is enamel and that is what caused the wrinkiling. You can put enamel over lacquer based paint but not the other way around. Read the new cans and see if they are lacqure based ... is so yuo need to remove all of the old enamel and start over or find some old enamel cans and just fix the wriinkled parts.

Yeah I was slightly aware of that issue.. I read the new can and it claims to be enamel based. I am going to scuff it up tonight and wait it out.. and see what happens. If that doens't work. I guess I will scuff again, and try to get the same paint I had the first time.
Thanks Bryan

No it can be the same kind of paint, its the solvents in the paint, the paint take at least 7-10 days to cure, if you respray it then it will react with the curing paint and wrinkle. The duplicolor can tells you this, the Mopar paint does not. The solvents in the paint have to evaporate while it cures, or it will get trapped and react. Generally, the hotter it is, the quicker it will happen, if its under 80F, then wait the full 10 days, 7 if you are feeling lucky.
