Soda blasting?
« on: April 26, 2008, 05:44:21 PM »

Anyone use this when working on their cars? I'm considering buying the eastwood kit and trying it out. I saw it on Trucks today and it looks like a really good method.

Just make sure you have at least a 60 gallon tank on your compressor and if it's not a 2 stage you will wait for it to make enough air. It will work, but it may take you longer than what they showed on TV. Remember those guys have everything they need to do a job.

I got a guy coming out next Saturday to do my 67 barracuda. He says $750 usually covers a car that size. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Soda is great for exterior paint removal, I like the idea of using water to keep dust down. THe big issue is going to be air volume with a small compressor. You can always borrow someones if you have a small one and run them in paralel.

Also when you are done....give it a good bath with soap and water.  The residue from I have been told will causes some kind of reaction between the metal and primer..

I think that soda blasting is the way to go. He showed up a little late, (3hrs  ) but it may well have been my misunderstanding.
Once he got started that thing did an amazing job! You could actually hold your hand underneath the place he was blasting and feel no heat at all It didn't harm rubber and actually POLISHED chrome. I wouldn't blast new chrome but it made some of the old pieces look real good. He did the whole car, less the hood as I'm using fiberglass, including both sides of the fenders and inside the trunk for $675.00

Are you going to use sand to blast off the Bondo and rusty areas?

I have a 1/4 panel, so it looks like the right side will be replaced. The rest of th car looks good with no surprises.
