Anybody Painted their cars themselves before?

Did mine in the garage with a thirty buck harbor frieght sprayer .Its not perfect but it was built to run and have fun not just look good.

On my RR, I used a single stage paint (acrylic enamel), shot it in the driveway (no booth), in 1994ish. One of the nice things, of doing it yourself, is I bought two gallons of paint for the job, which is too much. I poured both cans out into a bucket and mixed them together, to make sure the color of both would be the same, and saved the remaining paint for touch ups and repairs. This came in handy after a whipping trailer incedent damaged the left fender. Doing this made color matching a non problem. (No matter how good the code is or paint supplier is mixing it for you, there is always a shade difference from the original.)

On the Dart, I shot the engine compartment, trunk, interior black panels (single stage),the rest two stage (Chroma Base and clear) - roof, door jams, trunk jam, window recesses (front and rear). The dash frame was Rustoleum Satin black rattle can. The rest I sent out for the two stage 4 coats of clear as I just didn't have the time to do it. Plus I wanted somebody else to paint in the stripe as I knew I'd have to do that a few times before I was happy about it so I let the pro do it to save some of my sanity.

There is quite a bit of posts about using Rustoleum and a foam roller at www.sweptline.org It is very slow and labor intensive but it will come out looking like you sprayed it.

Man, you guys have some really great looking cars for do-it yourself paintjobs....Im hoping to have access to a booth when eventually paint my car...still trying to decide on what colour will look best with the green interior...thinking of some yellows, but not sure if they will match

Here is a pic of my first and only paint job.  It came out ok for a driver.  I learned a lot for my first time and would like to redo the paint job sometime down the road but I am having to much driving it right now.  The paint job on my 71 340 Duster clone will come out much better.

I painted my 73 Dart Sport this past Saturday with the Dupli-color Paint Shop dark blue. I will want a few weeks for the paint to cure before I wet sand and buff it out.

The quick skinny on the roller paint job -- it can be made to look real nice. No one would know it was rolled on, no roller marks or anything like that. But the paint is not as hard and chip resistant as a good hardened paint. I did it on my dart, and I think it looks good and so do others, and it's not even done yet (there is some orange peel in the last coat) but the paint is low on the priority list now .. though eventually I want to put a couple more coats on, then do some fine wetsanding and polish the whole thing. I put my last coat on probably 1.5 years ago, and have put a few scratches in it by working on it and around it in the garage that I am not certain, but I think if I had dinged a hardened paint job they might not have created damage. Hard to tell.

Well, I did it before, sometimes, somecars. Painted my litthe chevy wagon, so long ago in a time where the top product was acrilic paint. Worked quite well because I had lotsa time and little money. Also stripped and painted my 68 valiant bright orange, one stage, nitrocelulose paint. The bottom line is: it is all in the preparation, spraing the paint on it is just the chery on the cake. Then I gave up. I'm not so bad in engines, and I started making them as for living and the money I started making in it payed all my painting needs done by proffesionals that did and do work much better than I do. But I guess I'm just an old fart with some darts and all that fantasy is gone. Looks cool in the begining of that old hot rod tape, but in real life it sucks.

What the hell does that mean? It sure doesn't sound too good!

What he means is that you should be using a respirator that is getting fresh air so that the fumes from the paint chemicals don't make you sick.
Makes good sense.

Sorry about that! Cockney rhyming slang...Uncle Dick or Pat and Mick = sick.  I keep forgetting I'm on an American site, because everyone's talking the universal language of Mopar
