I believe there's a special tool you use to do a finish installation to it. It slips my mind the term of what's done to it. Sorry. I'm sure some one will chime in and refresh my memory on what it's called. The tool kind of steaks or holds it in the block from turning and pulling out.

most likely it was the garbage build-up on the distributor shaft that cause it to pull out. remove the old one and clue it in if you like or you can buy the tool. it's called a burnishing tool and will be needed to install a new bushing.

I replace that bushing without burnishing it. Took my dist. to the parts house and picked a bushing that slipped on it. You can probably use a little scotch brite in the dist. shaft and reuse your old bushing.

The only one I ever took out was in there real tight and I had to drive it out from the bottom so I'd say there was something really wrong that yours just came out that easy. When I installed the new one it also fit very tight in the block. I didn't have the burnishing tool they recommend but had no trouble driving it in with a piece of 1" round rod with the middle turned down to just fit in the bushing. Then when I tried to put the o.p. drive shaft in it wouldn't go in it so i had to run a 31/64" drill bit through it to open it up some. You have to be real careful though as to not take too much out or it will be loose and cause spark scatter (erratic timing). If I were you I wouldn't reuse the old one. Get a new one, they only cost about $8

..it probably became loose because it might have been left in if it was hot tanked?...either way...their's no special tool needed just get your basic bronze bushing for sbd bbd at any local machine shop.... slightly bevel and radius the end that fits into the block{way less hassels that way plus it will keep it from going out of round}...then use a old or any sbd oil pump drive install the bushing onto the shaft where it normally rides ... then slip the shaft back into it's place then place something on top of the drive {like a extension}....that will allow you to give it a couple liight knocks pressing it down into place ...the gear will slip into the gear on the cam keeping everything square ... pull the drive out once to make sure the bushing is bottomed out ...... and away you go........

yeah.. and just don't forget to bevel the end to give it a decent start without creating any excess filings...or possible distortion
