First, take off your CAPS LOCK
Only hidden horrors are $$ and exhaust depending on what you try to do. Start with the heads and build the short block to suit them.

with the caps off key. sooooo having said that SELL the 400. you can only get 500" out of them anyway. you already have a 440 in your hotrod so grab another 440 and crank on that one. 512" is easy, 526 is easy too, 540 not to hard either.

um ya 400s can go to 512 cid plus at the same cid with a 440 block you'll make more hp with the 400 based mill ... and the low deck will fit better in the a-body as welll.....

but will be an issue with a B block (thats if your going down that road in the future) with 500 odd inches, but think of this one.. take the crank and rods out of the 440 buy some suitable pistons and install them into the 400 block BINGO a 451 that loves to rev , the block is smaller (better header clearence) the pistons are A LOT lighter, its a win win for any Valiant & nitrous is ok in a 451

a low deck engine{400,383}. can actually handle more hp then a raised deck engine{440.413}..{hemi excluded}......because of it's shorter stiffer cylinder walls and smaller bearings journals{more meat on the caps}....

Ive got a 400/500 and am pleased with everything. The header situation has to be dealt with. But, its doable too. It has the lightest piston at less than 500 grams. It loves to rev, although I could use more head. (stealths with minor porting)
