WANTED: True stories, how you got out of that ticket?
« on: May 11, 2008, 08:00:45 AM »

I posted 2 stories of cops that let me go for running around with uncapped headers in Dartkids thread on escaping cops. Let's hear some of your true stories of getting out of tickets.

Here's one more. I didn't really get out of this one all the way, but here it is. I was flying down this roller coaster road when I passed a cop sitting at a light. As I went up and down these hills I could see the big Plymouth head lights, no flashing lights yet, catching up with me. As I went over the last hill I slowed down to a crawl. He popped over the hill and almost rear ended me. He was HOT. He yelled he Knew I was doing at least 80 but couldn't get a clock on me. He went on and on and on. Fineally he went to the back of my car and stuck his foot under my rear bumper and says " My shoe is a size 12 and your bumper is higher than 12 inces from the pavement. That's code, no more than 12 inches. Can you get this thing down right now?". I said no sir, it takes a mechanic to do it. He gave me an inspection ticket. The next day I let some air out of the shocks and took it to my buddy at the ESSO station and he signed off the ticket. I went by the local police  station and turned in the inspection certificate and was OK, no fine, Joe.

I have gotten out of at least 6 or 7 tickets, but it was nothing I said or did . It was because the officer decided to give me a break, and let me go.  the one that really made me mad was when I was ticketed for 65 in a 55 when I was really doing 50. I was not up to speed yet . I probably would have been doing 65 in another mile or so. I know he clocked someone else, but stopped me. I was going to fight it in traffic court, but later that day after I had some time to think about the whole thing , I just laughed and decided to pay it because of all the stuff I had been let off the hook for in the past ,and for all the hundreds of times I never got caught.

I've never got out of a ticket. Every time I've gotten pulled over I've been ticketed for something. I had a careless driving and 'operating an unsafe motor vehicle' charge that i fought in court and won 9 months later, but that's about it. Apparently the cops don't like it when you go Bo and Luke on them and send your car through the air, even if it is by accident.   hammer

A couple of times now I've pulled over to the side and shut down the vehicle before they had a chance to even light me up, they seem to respect the fact that you acknowledge your indiscretion without having to chase you down. I also throw in the yes sir's and no sir's for good measure.

Years ago an officer who had previous dealings with me ,(bar room scraps and such) pulled me over for improper lane change, could have wrote me up on a DUI but after seeing the fugly female that was in the truck with me he figured I would regret that night enough come morning , so he put me in a cab and sent me home

I should have asked for you to put your age too. I think when I was terrorizing the streets in the early 70's things were way different. I think the cops enjoyed a good fish story. A couple times cops pulled me over just to look at my car. Back then in MD you could take the back seat out and take the trunk lid off and tag a car as a truck. Hence, no safety inspection. If a cop saw you with the stripped down car, otherwise all hopped up, he'd pull you over and ask questions like "How much you charge for a cord of wood and will that thing haul it all at once?" If he caught you with the car put back together, with the truck tags on it, he'd make you meet him the next evening with it all stripped again. Keep em comin, Joe.

Not moving violations but I got out of 2 tickets... had to see the judge though.  I was stopped at a check point with an overdue inspection.  I waited a full 20 mins for the man to write the ticket.  When he got to the truck with the ticket I asked him if he forgot how to write it, I only had a 1/2 hour for lunch.  He said... I'll be right back.  When he returned he had another ticket for my registration not affixed to the windshield... It was just laying on the dash.  Then he said.. you got any more comment I'll give you a ticket for no front license plate  Roll Eyes

When I went to the judge I told him I just had a windshield replaced... My inspection was due this month and the stickers on the glass were from the "used" glass I bought and I never put the registration on the window when I renewed it since I needed to replace the glass before I got it inspected.. I also told the judge that I thought it was wrong to write I second ticket just because I made a comment to the cop... granted looking back on it it wasn't the smarted thing to say.  The judge let me out of both of them since all was well by the time I went to court

I got nailed for "unnecessary noise"in my W2 340 77' Aspen R/T  and beat it . The cops heard me bark the tires going down a back lane and earlier probably saw me blowaway a couple of 750 Honda bikes but didn`t have anything on me so they had to use the unnecessary noise deal . Anyway I got afidavits from a couple mechanic friends of mine and showed up to see the Magistrate. I sort of played dumb until he asked how I plead to the charge , I said I didn`t know which way to plead and after he explained it all , it was guilty , with an excuse . I then pulled from an envelope I had been holding out of sight and produced my "evidence" It mentioned how the transmission had a manual valve body and how my 3800 stall converter could easily make the tires squack  without trying . He bough it and I was off the hook ! Than God , because I was on probation for another rap at the time !

Jamesdart, if you haven't made it to court yet, on a first time ticket, always remember Peanut-Butter and Jelly. Your lawyer will know best, but PBJ also stands for Probation Before Judgement. That means they give you a probatiionary period, 6 months or a year, to keep your record clean. If you make the time period the case is thrown out. If you screw up again, oh well, they may through the book at you. Good luck, Joe.

Back in the day I had 108 PAGES of negative driving record but that's for a different post. One of the only tickets I've gotten out was recently when I got pulled over for no seatbelt. Battled with the POS cop and got the $194 ticket which I already too many. So, I took grainy polaroid pics of the higher truck from a similar postion the cop was in, I wore the same tan colored shirt as the interior and took them to court. After arguing my case and pissing off the cop his attitude came out and the judge agrred with me and dismissed the ticket. The shitty part is that 3 days later the same cop got me and said " Nice BLACK shirt MR. ______" . Frustrated

When I lived in Texas I was gettig popped for speeding, exhibition of accelleration , ect. all the time.   When the cop would ask for my lic. regs. and insur. I would pretend that I could not find my insur. card.  Ebery time I would get a ticket for no insur. and they would let me go on the moving violation.  I would just show up at court with my proof of insur. and have the ticket dropped. I did this 3 diff. times in 5-6 years.

Can't get away with it here in the NW. In oregon they will impound your car the first time you are pulled over with out insur.  \/][

The last ticket I got out off was here in the NW. I blew past a state trooper in a portable weigh station truck at about 95 on my Suzuki GS650. I knew I screwed up and pulled over on the next cross steet. He never turned on the lights but pulled in behind me. He ran my Lic. and told me, slow down and you will live longer.    He didn't even notice I didn't have my MC endorsment. Either that or he was realy having a good day!   !nanr

Now Karma caught up with me later.
I was pulling out of a repair shop one morning and just as I pulled out a kid on a bike flew past me from behind some tire racks alongside the sidewalk. He just grazed my front bumper, didn't even fall off the bike and no injuries.  I had already rolled into the street and could not safley back up so I pulled around the next business and returned to check on the kid and wait for the cops.
The cop that showed up came flying out of his car and came at me yelling and screamig hit and run and that I was in a world of trouble. This is were I went wrong! I got in his face and proceeded to tell him to "@$% off What hit and run, I am here you stupid @#$%." You are not the judge or jury and to give me my %#@ing ticket.  I also proceeded to tell the cop that in our city that riding a bike on a sidewalk in a bussiness district is against the law. The cop refused to ticket the kid. WTF!!!!  Frustrated

I did end up pleding guilty to this charge because I belived I was going to loose my lic., I told the judge that I was on anti- drepessant meds. and the Dr. was playing around with diff. meds. (this happened to be true), I was able to take the case to mental health court and after 1 year of showing up once a month to tell the judge I was staying on my meds, and staying out of trouble the charge was dropped.

Stay out of trouble y'all!!! Big brother is watching!!!

O.K. here goes but please don't be biased cause my 1st car was a shivvy,,,61 to be exact,,it was 1969 , was 17--paid $165 for a 7 year old shivvy--not bad even today--283, 3sp.--took it home and yanked on the muffler til I broke the y pipe . 1st trip around the block I run into the town cop. . It's a small town --he's a big dummy with an attitude but fortunately he had a heart in there too,,he said " back that thing back in your driveway & I don't wanna see it on the street til it's legal !"
For years he watched me like a hawk but always managed to stay on his good side by showing respect (or was it fear ?).
I had moved up to fast motorcycles . Had a 750 Kawasaki H2 .At the time the fastest production mc made ! 3 cylinders of of lightweight -pipey power . Of coarse I had to mill the heads -chambers -big carbs etc. One night unbeknowest to me he had chased me & a buddy all over town for hours . He met up with us downtown mainstreet and he was pissed . He jumped out of the car with his hand on his gun and shakin his other fist at us . He said " I been chasin you two for an hour !!! I could hear you on one side of town & by the time I get there you're on the "other " side of town . Now get those f___ing things out of town or you're goin to jail !" Yes sir ! Bye.
We were fortunate to have God & the "big hearted cop " watching over our shoulders !---Mopar Tom

Hey Chryco,

Those are some wierd burnout marks.......look like "check marks." How are you doing those? Or am I just a dumb kid and it's all done the same?

For everyone else,

I've gotten out of 6 or 7 tickets, a lot of speeding, a couple for no blinker, and one for "driving on the white line" on the side of the road. Nothing much really to tell. I was just honest, let them know yes sir I was speeding or whatever, and they just let me go.

One of them was on a 55 mph road at midnight. I was the only car on the highway, and came racing up on an unmarked crown vic. Thought, $H!7!, that's a cop. Went passed him and then slowed to 60 and watched my rearview till he turned his lights on. The funny part is that while I was watching the rearview, I kept crossing the center line cause I wasn't paying attention to the road. When the cop asked me why I kept weaving back and forth, i told him "cause I knew you were a cop and I was watching you in my rearview, waiting for you to pull me over for speeding."

Oh well.

The only ticket I didn't get out of was for not wearing a seatbelt. I hate the damn law. My g/f still tells me to this day "That sure was an expensive gallon of milk. I could have bought a pair of shoes with that money!"  Dunno

mopar tom, I have an H2 that's 10,064 original mile bike , bought from original owner, exspansion chambers, mc coony carbs, magneto conversion, milled heads, anodized aluminum rims and has one of those 70's era starburst airbrush jobs. Pretty cool lil bike, I fire it up about 4 times a year just to knock the dust out, sounds like 3 huskivarneer chain saw's on steroids.

sorry for the thread jack guy's , not many people familiar with the H2"s now-a-days

My first street bike was a '72 Yamaha R5 350cc two stroke... Cool

A buddy had the 500cc Kawi (H1 )...Those 2/stroke triples kicked serious Booty..!!

If you weren't careful popping the clutch, they'd wheelie and plant yer ass on the ground like right NOW..!

Back to topic:

I got out of a speeding ticket once because I had a SCUBAPRO sticker on the back window of my car and the cop who pulled me over was also a diver...I had been doing about 60 in the 35 MPH zone, and he had me caught dead-to-rights on RADAR.

He asked me for the Lic & Reg and then asked if I was a SCUBA diver...So I said: "Yeah...you too..?"

So right there we just started BS'ing about SCUBA equipment and best SoCal dive spots and after about ten minutes he told me to slow down and let me go... Grin

Being nice and respectful usually gets me out of tickets. Usually you get a ticket after being pulled over by what you say and the way you act  Madd getting out of the car etc. If you are a smart A%% or give some limp excuse you get a ticket. "hey you got me I was wrong" 75% of the time will get you off a ticket. Trust me it works I can burn up a rheem of paper with my younger years DMV check.

the only one I got out of is when the cop that stopped me was actually the teacher for the traffic class Id attended the night before (to avoid another ticket).

all he said was "you didnt learn much, did you?" and waved me on.
never got out of another.  in cali, it seems if they stop you, youre getting written up (period)

When I first got my license I was stopped constantly.  I dated a whole lot of cops back then!  After I finished college, and worked in an ER, I realized that I got police courtesy!  How great is that!  It makes up for dealing with a bunch of crazies in the ER.  I forgot one other way to get out of a ticket...CRY!  Works every time!

Once, when I was about 18, I was idling down the side of a club checking out girls when I heard one of them say to her friends " I love Chargers". My buddy says do a burnout, that chick likes your car, So like a dope, I do this huge two gear burnout. Next thing you know, I'm surrounded by unmarked police cars. They were obviously staking the place out for something and they were bored. They asked me why were you driving like such an asshole? I said because that girl over there liked my car. The cop siad at least you're honest and only gave me a ticket for loud exhaust.

A couple of years ago when things were bad between me and my girlfriend of 8 years I was going to her apartment (she moved out but we still tried) and I went through a yellow light kind of fast as it turned red. Well wouldn't you know there was a cop right there. The lights go on and I pull over. He asked why I was going so fast through that yellow light. I told him that I was going to my girlfriends house. He said "Is 5 minutes going to make that much of a difference?". I said " YEAH! You don't know my girlfriend.". He let out a laugh and just sent me on my way.

Hey 67dart gt, if your running around without your seat belt you are a DUMB KID. I really would like to meet you some day like all the other members. But, I don't want to meet them at your funeral. I think I've told this story before but here it is again just for you. When I was about 20 my best friend and I had twin 69 340 Darts. His was a stick and mine an auto. He hated the stick and I loved it, so on Fri and Sat nights we'd trade cars. One night I was testing a new tune up on his car. I shifted 3rd and glanced at the speedo and it was over 90. Then I swerved to miss something in the road and the car just took off sliding to the left. The next thing I remember was coming to in a hedge row. I managed to get the car a couple hundred yards down the road before the front left wheel fell off. The next day when we went to check the damage we found I hit a fire hydrant, that sheared the spindle off the left wheel. Then I hit a tree hard enough it crushed the water pump on the engine. As the car spun to the right it hit a low limb on the tree driving the roof back to the point the steering wheel was on the outside of the car. both doors were jammed and the bench seat was bent in half down the middle so you kept sliding to the center of the car. The rear axle was bent so if one tire was on the ground the other was about 2 inches in the air. The drivers side took most of the hit and was crushed like a beer can, the pass side was warped and twisted to the point no parts could be saved. Needless to say all the glass was out. When the cop got there he started yelling he was going to site me for hit and run and trying to flee the scene of an accident. I said it was only a tree and look at my car. He went over and looked at the car and came back and went round and round me with his flashlight. He kept asking if I was really driving that thing and was I OK. He said he'd never seen some one live through a wreck like that much less walk away without a scratch. My hair, ears, and pockets were full of glass, but not a scratch. Was I really lucky, yeah. Did I have my belt on, yeah, lap and shoulder. Now that I'm with UPS if I move a truck 1 inch my belt goes on first.

Sorry for the lecture but staying alive is important.

Oh, the cop did not give me any tickets for that one. When he found out it was my friends car he figured I was in enough trouble.

Hey Pedles, I did try crying once and the cop smacked me across the face and said "Pull youself together man, you're embarassing me!". Joe.

Luckily the guy I know has had this problem on his mopars. We did 3 tests
1. we removed the center plug wire from the cap to see if there was spark.
2. bypassed the ballast resistor and check if there is spark again.
3. he had an extra electronic style distributor in his shop, he took it and plugged it into the harness side of the electrical system and told me to turn the key to the on position, then he turn the shaft on the distributor he was holding and found that the pick-up coil on my dist. was shot, so we had to pull the dist. take it into his shop and replace the pick-up coil with a new one, he installed the old style braker plates from a 72 dist. unstead of the coil being secured to the plate with a pop rivet and the screw, the 72 plates secured the coil with the screw and a nipple sticking off of the top of the plate, he also gave me a new pick-up coil, and we put the dist. back together and reinstalled it, started it up and it came back to life, I of course compensated my friend with cash, and proceeded to go home. My wife wanted me to pick up a gallon of milk for the morning, and I needed to put some gas into the tank so I wouldn't run out. Pulled into the mini mart/gas station did my thing, and pulled back out onto the street and up to a red light, some import pulls up next to me and when the light turns green, he floors it and screatches his tires, so I proceed to take off, dump the clutch, and ripped up the asphault, he immediatly backed off, and I started to slow down, and look up into my rearview mirror and see a set of red and blue flashing lights , (OH CRAP!), so I pull over and the lady cop says to me " you know why I pulled you over right?" I said yes officer it was for excessive speed,  she said yes and please let me see your driver's license and registration, so I get my license out and she says, cause it looked like you and the other car were going to drag race,   because he squelled his wheels and you took off like a shot, I say's I did not here his wheels , because of my ............. She went back to her car with my license, and about this time my friend calls me on my cell phone and askes me how the Dart was running and I said" It's running great, but I have a black and white sitting behind me and I think I'll be getting a ticket , He says, "Oh, OK, call me back and let me know what happend", just about this time the officer comes back and gives me my license and tells me to slow it down. WHEW!   I called my friend back and told him what happend, and he said your lucky that the officer did not arrest me for drag racing, I wouldn't call it drag racing because it was less than a block from the time it started untill the time I was pulled over and I prefer to call it "a good old fashioned tire roast"   apparently the officer was behind me the entire time. I appreciate the officer doing her job but I've seen these import cars go buzzing by me when I am driving my daily driver which really is'nt that fast, I just have to wonder were the police are when these import drag racing is being done
Thanks for reading a long story and hope you enjoyed it.

If you guys had the time to get through Shawn's yarn, I guess I can relate my story that happened in Puerto Vallarta just this past February.  If you've ever driven in Mexico, you know that it's like watching a video game through your windshield with all these rusted-out rattle traps vying for any edge to squeeze their fender in front of you.  You also would know that the dedicated left-turn lane is 3 lanes to the right and when the arrow says turn you cross-over 6 lanes of traffic to either go left or make a U-turn.
Well...late to get to the airport (as usual) and still had to drop-off the rental bucket and there was no possible way to get to the other side w/out making an incredibly dangerous 6 lane U-turn, but I seized a slight opening in traffic and squeeled across the estrada only to find a Federale standing in my lane pointing me to the curb...he witnessed the entire shenanigan and wasn't too pleased judging by the scowl.  Now I'm of Italian and Mexican descent and a few days in the sun I start looking pretty "local", so this guy starts in on me in Spanish and waving his arms around like I just ran-over his puppy, and I had to explain that I did not habla espanol and the only language that I knew was of a currancy nature.  I peeled all the pesos that I had in my pocket, @ $850p and asked if this would supplant the need for me to surrender my license and see the judge the following day, (it was Sunday when I was leaving) and he said in perfect English that "I had made a very wise decision" and turned around without another word.  Bribed my first, (and hopefully last) Federale Smiley

Yup.  Common courtesy goes a long way in todays disrespectful society.
