subframe connector designs?
« on: May 12, 2008, 12:12:16 AM »

I was wondering, seeing as I'm planning on doing a independent rear suspension system which would leave my driveshaft in one height all the time so I was thinking about maybe instead of subframe connectors driver side of the front to driveside of the rear subframe and likewise for the passenger side doing a x style subframe connector going from one side of the front subframe to the opposite side of the other crossmember. what do you guys think of that plan I believe thats how they did subframe connectors on the old nascar cars.

think about the driveshaft.
Thats what I mean seeing as I'll be using independent rear suspension with the pumpkin mounted so the driveshaft will stay in one position in the tunnel and won't ever move up and down(if it does something Baaaad happened lol) so I don't see it being a real issue. yes removing the driveshaft would be a whole lotta work but I was just thinking of the structural strength I may add by connecting all 4 corners as well as the front and rear subframes.

I'm not an engineer so I couldn't tell you which is stronger. But I know the old corvettes and impalas had an X frame with a large oval in the middle for the driveshaft.  Are you thiking it would be stronger or just diff?  would it make other things harder to do? How big of tubeing?  Would you need to cut your floor boards in an x?

Check out www.lateral-g.net or www.pro-touring.com there are a lot of suspension designers on those forums.  I know you want a good handling car, so the suspension and chassis needs to be very well thought out.  An X frame usually involves removing the floor, Morrison builds there Tri-five chassis to not cut out the floor.....that's a $20,000chassis tho.

Just for reference....this challenger is being built by a local shop.  C-6 suspension, fabbed chassis, twinturbo 6.1 etc.....baddest challenger being built.  They got a build thread on lateral-g.  I know this is way hi-end for me anyway, but it's good to see how things are done
