Easy 17" tire question.
« on: May 12, 2008, 02:29:53 PM »

It looks like the Demon will finally be ready to see the street finally and I am looking for some new shoes.  Basically I want to know how lame it will look with new magnum/charger steel wheels on it?  I know the offset (22mm) is for new rear wheel drive cars (ala mustang) but will it look so lame I want to puke in my mouth?  I do have B/F body spindles on it and Bill's arms, think they will hit? any who thanks.

Nope, they are just the stock 13(?) hole 17" magnum/charger steel wheel.  I know from the side it will look tough as hell but just worried more about the offset i guess.

Can't respond as to offset / backspace issues on either the LX wheels or the Crown Vic wheels, but the LX bolt pattern is NOT 4.5 inch like the Crown Vic wheel.   It's in mm and if you convert the 4.5 measurement to the nearest mm measurement, you'll find they do not match up.   My advice is to stay away from the LX wheels.

I've already tried these on my Cuda w/4.5 bolt circle and while they will actually go over the studs, the lug holes do not center up on the studs.   NOT GOOD.

If you're going to experiment, check further on the CV wheels...

Well, now that you mention year models, I'll tell you what I know (I have a fleet of Cr.Vic. police cars and a few Chargers as well).    '02 and down are pretty much one wheel (16") but I don't have anything older than '00 to reference.  Anyway, in '03, they changed the front suspension on the Vics and included R&P.   The wheels from '02 don't fit on the '03s and vice-versa.  They're both still 16" but the '03s are way different looking.  '06 is still similar wheel, but now 17".   For a Mopar 4.5 bolt circle, I would think the '02 down would be the one to experiment with.   I'd have to pull a wheel cover to be sure, but I think it's got a whole bunch of approx. 1" holes all the way around.   Let me know if you have any other questions, I can always take a look when I go to work...

Thanks for all the help. From what I have seen and my research you are correct the 03 up 17" wheel will not work, for they have wayyy too much back space, more like a traditional front wheel drive. And correct once again on the only 16" available on the pre (something) to ott 2.  I think i can get wide enough and low enough profile tire for a sixteen inch wheel.  I would run a 245 45 15 but they dont make em.  Thank euse guys for the help, and maybe when I get the flat white on with satin black wheels, hood and stripes on I will post a pic.

check the spare tires they are still full size on vics ,and may have a more interesting look. I bet they could be had really cheap from any salvage yard.

The 17" vics look like the wheel I might need for an upcoming project - how wide are they, and what should I look for to get a set? Certain years only, of is it a specific package on only certain 03-up ones?  Are they 8" rims?

Bill,
I'll check out the details on the wheels for you tomorrow.  I have part numbers and prices I can get you.  I also have some new and used wheels I can look at and measure.

In '03, Ford put a whole new aluminum K member and front suspension (including R&P) on pretty much the same, earlier frame.   From what I've observed with one on a lift (and trying to interchange wheels), the control arms push the rotor and wheel mounting surface further out than '02, down, so wheels aren't interchangable.  I took measurements way back and seriously considered whether I could slip a complete Cr.Vic. suspension under my Cuda.   The control arms are also aluminum.  I later saw the AlterKtion and went with that   Grin

I get confused with offset and backspace, but the wheels have a very, flat, flush face to them.  The disk part of the wheel is way out to the outer edge of the rim.  If you tell me what measurements you need, I'll do that tomorrow and get back to you...

'06 - '07 Crown Vic Cop car wheel (17") :

Part #7W7Z1007C
Price I've been paying:  $115.22

8 5/8" outer lip edge to outer lip edge
7 1/2" wide between inner edge of lips
Approx. 6 1/2 - 6 3/8" from mounting surface to edge of back lip

'05 wheel is virtually the same wheel but 16" and only costs me $58.46   Madd

Good info. I also found today that the Calibers(and lots of similar new models) are 4.5" bolt circle, +40mm offset. On an 8.5" rim, thats about 5-7/8" backspace.

Well, actually it'd be a bit less, minus the rim edge, probably 5 1/2 bs or so.

The Caliber is a 17x6.5" steel wheel.  The Sebring/Avenger have the same size steel wheel.  Not sure if it's the same wheel.  Caliber wheel/wheel cover...
