Summit exhaust systems?
« on: May 12, 2008, 10:32:08 PM »

I just got my 67 BBDart fired this weekend with open headers.  I started looking into getting an exhaust system for it.  TTI etc is out of the question because of the expense and I will probably run open headers most of the time anyways.  I was looking on line at Summit and they list 2.5 and 3 in exhaust for an a-body for about $200.00.  I realize that I will have to do some fabbing etc on it.   I was wondering if anybody here has tried Summit exhaust kit or has another suggestion for putting a exhaust under it for a reasonable amount.  Thanks Dan

I bought my B-body 2.5" mandrel bent system from Jeg`s (same one as Summit - made by Heartthrob Exhaust systems in MN.) and apart from the box damaged in shipping and parts lost (happens on any type of order ) I am quite happy with the way all parts finally fit etc and with the optional X-pipe I installed the car sounds great too.  Oh yeah , Jegs sent me out all the parts and more that were missing in the original order, no worries ! Where ever you buy from , they `re good stuff.

PS - When assembling use the new style "band" clamps , makes going together a lot easier.

I have been looking at the summit kits as well....they seem like an awesome deal, and i have heard that they go together pretty reasonably for the price...Not sure if im going to go with the 3 inch kit that has the summit mufflers or with the 3 inch kit that has no mufflers and put some flowmasters in it...anybody got experience with those summit welded mufflers?

I ran the 2.5 center/center on 67 with a 340.  It just had turn downs on it.  They are kinda quite compared to a flow or borla at idle.  with the turn downs though it made it rumble pretty good.  No X or H pipe.  It would set off car alarms where ever I went.  They did "open up" or scream when you got on it, sounded really good.  I would kinda call them a stealth muffler, some what mellow idling but would let loose when you nailed it.  Not but for $14 each or what ever they were back then.  If you're on a tight budget they are way worth it. But if you can afford it I might go with something else if you want a loud car.

drag tree  I bought this same kit for my 69 Dart. (3 " with the Mufflers) It was like getting mufflers for $40.00  I figured if it sounded like crap I'd spring for some Flowmasters later. Also picked up the 3" X pipe with it. Love - Love - Love it.  I think it sounds awesome. Pipes straight out the back with a slight turn down. bat  Only problem you may have is if you moved the springs inboard, you need to tweak the tail pipes to the outside of the leaf springs. Oh yea, if you plan to take it off much, I'd say get the Band clamps to put it together with. That way you don't crush the pipes, and it comes apart easy duster

I was running the turbo muffler. I think the welded muffler is the same just insted of a stamped or compressed seams its welded.  Not sure but thats what it looks like to me. I dont know how much HP it takes to blow out a muffler?

I fitted the Summit 3 inch system on my Road Runner. I didn't bother with all the clamps and welding it all together. The 3 inch welded mufflers are Flowtech Afterburners and they are loud. I new they would be when I could see right through them and they don't have any wadding. I recently fitted Flowmaster 40 Delta Flows and also added an h-pipe. I like the sound now, a little quieter and a lot less resonance. My advice would be to get the pipe kit and fit mufflers of your own choice.

Cheers Blue. Been lurking around this board for some time now but never posted before.
Weather permitting I'll be a Shakey's on Friday afternoon.
The exhaust sounds a lot better with the h-pipe, it sounded a bit raspy when I first fitted the Flows. I'm fitting a new clutch this weekend so the exhaust has got to be dropped, hence the two piece h-pipe idea.

I noticed they state systems are fitted to Hooker Comp headers - I have TTI's , will I be able to "tweak" at home or are we talking muffler shop, not sure what the variance will be.
