Front and rear spring widths.
« on: May 13, 2008, 09:30:46 PM »

What are you guys running for the front and rear spring widths?I have read the the car will handle better with the spring about 1.5" wider at the rear ( each side ).Is this true what should it be and what works for you?I was going to move the springs in then put the sliders directly under the rear frame .But if you measure on my car atleast the front frame is 38.25" and the rear is 37.75" this would make the rear of the springs closer and I have read that wider at the rear makes the car handle better. So I would have to make the sliders fit more to the outside of the rear frame .Which will cut down on my tire clearance some.Any input will be appreciated!
Thanks!

If you look at some pictures of the inboarded leaf springs you will see the leaf spring box is wider than the frame rail.  So people mount the box flush with the outside of the frame and past about .5 to an inch on the inside.  That will probably bring the front springs closer together than rear.  If you have your inboard kit. set the boxes the same width as the outer frame but then measure the inside and see if its narrower than your rear width.

If you get down to the small hairs, non-parallel leaf springs will have a bit more lateral stiffness in a carl, but it's easily a very tiny part of the overall behavior, and not really anything to be concerned with.
Stock A-bodies are parallel, E-bodies are wider at the front, and B-bodies are wider at the rear(at least the 71-72 B's are). They all work quite well, with no discernable difference between any of them.
Also note that these small factors are more important as weight goes up - if an a-body rear axle had 3000lbs on it, you might want to do some things to combat possible issues, but with nary 1500lbs on a loaded A-body axle, it won't have much affect.

Now on the other hand, if you move the springs in like I did in the tech pages, the front eyes will end up about 3/8" narrower per side than the rear eyes, which will give you 3/4" total narrower in the front. If you leave some of the bottom side intact, you could probably get it inboard another 1/2" per side without any strength issues and you'd hit your number. If you bolt your sliders to the springs, and then weld them where they fall on the frame, they'll be slightly crooked to match the springs, but they'll still fall under frame rails. I'm assuming the 1.5" you speak about is total - not sure where you read that though.

So from what your saying Bill it won't have that much of a effect .I want to be able to put my slider on my back frame and not have to build something off the side .Also does having the slider flat on the frame cause any real problems (street car) that are noticable.Or should they be at a angle? Also would you guys remove the rear spring shackle box or just leave it? Bill here is the link to where I was reading about the springs being narrower in the front.http://www.afcoracing.com/tech_pages/leaf.shtml
Thanks!
