"Older" rebuilt engines
« on: May 13, 2008, 11:42:01 PM »

I'm getting ready to purchase this rebuilt 273 v8 from my local junkyard, i trust the guys there and i've known them for a while.

the engine was rebuilt a while ago (maybe 6 or 7 years) and it sat for a while. Its a 273 v8, cam, forged pistons, intake, etc..

any way when they first got the engine they started it up and it ran good and then they let it sit for a couple of years, they have all the recepits to it (total $1500 invested)

they'll sell it to me for $500, I'm planning on just dropping this in my car and driving it

Is it okay for rebuilt engines to sit for a couple years and still be okay?

As long as no moisture, small animals, dirt, grime, cockroaches, (you get the idea), got inside the engine it "should" be in the same exact conditon it was when it last ran.
I would pull the oil pan and valve covers at the very least and give everything a good look over. Maybe even pull a main bearing and rod bearing to see what condition they are in.  I tend to worry about stuck rings, but that would reqiure more tear down than I would want to do on a used $500 Engine.

If everything looks good prime the oil system and fire it up and see what happens!!!

I am running a 400 that sat for 24 years before I bought it. I did nothing but change the oil before starting and 2000 miles later the engine is running great. I pulled the engine from a 78 chrysler newport, so the the engine was well protected underneath the hood with the air filter still on it.

i got the engine today it turned out to be an original commando engine (1966), it has crane iron adjustable rockers, an edelbrock ld 340 manifold, the heads have been ported to match the ntake, forged aluminum pistons, a "big ass" camshaft, acel u groove spark plugs

I cant wait to get it on the stand so i can clean it up

This motor is going into a 1966 valiant that has a fully re-built stock 727, what converter/ flexplate do you all reccomend?

Also i want this engine to sound good and loud, what headers are available for this car. I'd like atleast 1 7/8" primaries, i heard of fenderwells but im wondering about what needs to be cut for them and how they exit through the inner fenders?

The TTI headers from Mancini would be a good choice for that size engine.
1963-66 - "A" Body, "A" engine 1 5/8" to 1 3/4"
Polished Ceramic coating.

Headers require tti's Starter and Transmission crossmember
$815.00
TTI6365A-C5
There are less expensive headers out there, but you get what you pay for. hammer Willie

Yeah definitely look over in the early a body section. I belive abody Joe and his buddy dvjcuda have tried a couple of different brands.

Hard to stuff headers in the early a's.

Neat engine Cheesy

It's all cleaned up & painted now, i replaced about everything neccesary...the oil pan gasket, water pump & gasket, valve cover gaskets, thermostat & gasket, fuel pump & gasket etc...

Now i just have to install the blue moroso wires & Chrome/blue wire looms

the carb is a used 600 cfm edelbrock that i got for free Cheers

i got about $600 in the motor, $600 in the trans, $1100 in the rear, and i bought the car for $1800 so for about $4100 i got a clean running valiant !nanr
now i just need a clean paint job & a carpet and ill be good & maybe the stock wrinkle black 273 4 barrel valve covers

Wow, great find.

Yeah, I hear you on the valve covers. I'm looking for some for my 340... I've got the air cleaner, but no valve covers since all I've seen are crap.
