Priming engine with oil

I am about ready to fire the engine in the Duster.  It is a 408 smallblock that was run on the dyno last year.  I read the recent threads on priming the oil.  Since the engine was run so long ago, I want to prime it again.  I will use the priming shaft and turn clockwise.  The question is Should I rotate the engine by wrench while priming?  If I do that, how do I keep track of the distributor/oil pump gear location to camshaft gear to keep everything timed right for distributor?  Need your opinions.  Thanks

if it was run previously i would just remove the plugs and spin it with the starter untill it build pressure.

then do it again to actually move some of the oil out or into the pockets and pools in the heads and lifter valley.

this of course after changing filter and oil.

but i am a tad on the lazy side.

You don't have to turn the engine when priming. Just put the priming shaft in the pump and turn it till you get oil pressure on the gauge, then your done.

Since it was run previously, I would just prime it without cramking it.
That will pre-lube your brgs.
then when you fire it then you will have instant oil pressure.

Hey Guys, Thanks for the responses.  That sounds good to not rotate engine with dist and shaft out.  I will run with the drill motor and priming shaft to be sure there are no leaks to the mech oil pressure gauge.  Thanks again.

just a reminder that the valve-train gets zero lube unless the engine spins.
unless it has been modified beyond factory design.

However this engine has run , not necessary to turn over .
