Going cross country on vacation
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:28:07 AM »

My girlfriend and I are taking a trip across the country for two weeks. We are leaving Friday afternoon. We live in Rhode Island and are renting a car and loading it up.

I just got off the phone with dabignuttedman and pinke and will hopefully be stopping by for a visit.  bbd sign

Our first scheduled stop is the Carlsbad Caverns and then up to the Grand Canyon where we have a cabin reserved. Going north we will go through Denver so I can see where my Broncos play.  !nanr
The Black Hills in South Dakota is next and THEN to our holy shrine. The Walter P. Chrysler museum in Michigan.  drinks

It will be nice to get away from the everyday stress. Hopefully we won't kill each other along the way.  Frustrated

Sounds like you won't be coming this far, but have a great trip. I can't imagine coming that far across the country and not going to Yosemite, though.

Years ago, my friend was selling his 69 Shelby GT 500. A guy in Oregon bought it, so I got to go from Long Island to Portland Oregon in the Shelby, then rented a car and drove to san fransisco to fly home. AEWSOME trip. Yellowstone is still one of the most awesome memories I have. Have a great trip.

Sounds like a fun trip.  I'll be doing the same for the month of July going from San Diego to Mass.  I'm going to drive even if fuel is 5 bucks a gallon.  Airfare is triple what it was last time I went back and I don't want to put my dog in a  travel carrier for 12 hours.  Did the car rental place have a problem with you taking a car that far away from where you rented it?  I was thinking of renting a van.

We have unlimited mileage on the rental. Lets hope gas doesn't get that high. It's bad enough that we went for an intermediate car rather than an SUV because of gas mileage.

We were going to go through Yosemite but it's the time constraints. We will be spending some time in the Black Hills checking out the ghost towns and history along with Crazy Horse monument and Mt. Rushmore.

I hope you have a blast!!!

I did the same thing in 1993 with my girlfriend. We rented a new toyota camry and proceeded to put about 7-8K miles on it. Went out west from MD out to CA. Camped in Leadville Co. Neat town. Grand Canyon, Vegas, Disneyland, San Diego, Yuma, Phoenix, San Antonio, Huston, New Awlins and Burbon Street, back up through the Great Smokys all the way home.

I'll never forget that trip. One of the best months of my life.

I hope you all have a safe journey and make as many awesome memories as we did!!! Cheesy

Cheers,

Chris E.

PS. one cool thing we did was to take pictures of each of the state signs as we crossed the state line, and paste them to a usa map when we got home. Cool!

My son lives in Narragansett (couldn't be too far away  LOL ). Keep in touch, I'm in Denver if you're ready for a cup of jo or a cold one. I'm single and have a 4 B/R home if you need a night away from motels or a home cooked meal (cooking's my hobby).

you may want to stop n pee, thats a long 1st stop Smiley
new mexico was a great drive for me,just beautiful.

stu's driving tip:
always drive through a big town before you get a motel, the rates are cheaper and you don't have to sit in rush hour traffic the next morning. Wink

lol bash
We got a Pontiac G6 for a rental car. Didn't want to go bigger just because of gas mileage. I'm going to try and keep track of the gas we use.

We are leaving in a couple of hours. Adios!
