I think the power can very, weather or not your trying to get all that power to the ground is another thing.  I think a 9" with 30 or 31 splines could handle 375-425 WHP with a big tire or slicks in a heavy car and a high stall leaving hard off the line.  But you could run a 550 HP if you only have 205/65R15 tires in the rear, cause it wont hook enough or try to twist the axles.

This might help http://www.moserengineering.com/Pages/axletech.html

I always thought it was cheaper and more cost effective to just buy new/ better axles, how much does it usually cost to have axles shortened and re-splined?

Smiley Iam going the same way,I got the 9" with small Chevy disk brakes.I don't know about them axles but a racer friend broke the housing all the way arould in 2 pieces with a Ford 427sideoiler it had 30"x9"Hooiser.My friend with a dragster has a nice Aluminum 9" housing that has big axles, that thing is lite about $385 more, they make iron housing that are good too.I do think we need good axles, are you going to cut & respline your axes or think about it? Grin I have a  8 3/4 to break with spooled 456,then I have to break the 9" with spooled 456 I run 29"x10" next 31"er for the 511.16cid  Evil I know I can break'em then I build a good one if I don't wreck the car when they go.  explode they say under a 1.45 60ft it about it on a 8 3/4 without backbrace,we going to see, Blah Blah Blah I'll be crying about it next week lol

When you build a 9" rear with mostly stock parts, the only thing you're really gaining is the pinion support.  You still need to upgrade the carrier and axles. By the time you do all that, you may still be ahead of the game getting a complete dana. I went through this with my brother years ago.

I would be extremely wary of resplining axles. Cheap is cheap, but with slicks or some decent form of traction you can strip off the resplining work. Imagine that happening at the line or worse somewhere slightly down track at speed! Can you say sudden, hard left turn!?!? Remember the resplined portion is not hardened; your into the soft part of the metal. Besides, if cost is everything, why, oh why, are you doing a 9" Huh The cost of a 9" is still about a grand more than a Dana complete. 8 3/4's are still cheaper yet and are good to about 700HP or 500 RWHP. Or am I missing something here?

I used a 9" once behind a 500" RB and it was a disaster.  I went cheap and the axle lasted about two months.  It twisted both axles and they finally snapped.

9" ford rears stock are pretty much junk for performance. It will definatly be cheaper to find a truck dana and narrow it.
