Starting him out young
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:17:09 PM »

Tonight I'll be watching my GF's 5 y/o son while she works late, so since the weather is nice, I'm going to roll a /6 out of the garage and have him help me work on it. Figure I'll have him do something simple like replace the head/manifold studs and teach him a few tricks with that. Of course I'll be watching closely over his shoulder while he does this, but hey, it'll still make him feel like he's contributing. This engine is the one I'll be dropping into the Duster and running while I build up the 383 and beef up the rest of the car in preparation for it.

She's going to hate seeing him all greasy and oily. Hell she hates seeing me that dirty  explode

That is a great idea. Thats what kudah440 and I did with our daughter. She was five when she helped replace drum brakes on the duster. I'll have to find the pic of her sitting in the engine bay at 6 and putting oil in it.

Well we didn't get the manifolds off like I had planned, but we spent hours in the garage and I taught him all about how a carb'd gasoline engine works, and what each part does, and now he even knows how (and why) an EGR system works, along with how to find the right socket and extension and use a ratchet to get at nuts and bolts.

Not bad for a 5 y/o kid. He's going to be a hardcore car junky, I can tell. We finally went back inside to eat some food and so he could clean it up and watch some cartoons (old looney tunes, I don't do that current day horse shit), and all he wanted to do was go back out into the garage and work on the engine. I told him we'll do more later on this summer. He's going to go nuts when I get the V8 and start acquiring parts for it  !nanr
