Is under hood insulation really needed?
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:11:48 AM »

This past weekend while walking around at a cruise in, my fiance' asked me why I didn't take that "NASTY" insulation off the under side of my hood. She pointed out that many of the cars with high end paint at the show didn't use such insulators.

My reply.........."ummmm I don't know why..........."

Is that insulator really necessary? Do I risk damaging the hood or paint without it? If not, why is it there in the first place?

Thanks,

Chris E.

I think it's basically a sound deadener.  I ripped mine out.

Like stated, mainly for sound control.  I could see it helping a small amount to preserve the paint.  However, it retains and drop dirt on the engine.  It looks bad.

I didn't have enough clearance for mine so it was one long enough to scuff the paint on the lid to the air cleaner on a trip to downtown indy for Mopars on the Circle

They accumulate oil and dirt. Then they become a fire hazard. I'll never keep one on a car.

Mine came off when I added the twin scoops.  The scoops are not functional right now, but may become that way someday.  I don't recall if any of the twin scoop cars (functional or not) had the insulation.  Anyone know for sure? Dunno

I thought they kept the paint from blistering.

The insulation was strictly there for sound deadening.

if you really want to run it, might not be so bad to buy a new one but a couple of years of daily driver duty and that stuff is just nasty. my dad always used to yell a tme because every car i ever owned i ripped it out. he swore it saved the paint especially with headers.  i kept telling my buddy to rip it off his firebird, he wouldnt. one day the plastic cheap shit oil line broke for the oil psi guage, it squirted hot oil on the headers and hood insulation. what a flaming mess. the car was saved but it would have been a lot better if it wasnt for the insulation.
