Rolling chassis (finally!)
« on: June 02, 2008, 10:22:21 PM »

Sat it on the ground for the 1st time in a long time.  I read as many posts about tire sizes as I could find when I was in the process of picking tires.  I decided on 245/60/15 in the rear (stock wheel well and spring location) and 215/65/15 in the front.  I have 3/4" of clearance on either side of the rear tires and can get more if I trim the fender lip.  The fronts have plenty of clearance unless I lower the car so that it's sitting on the lower control arm bump stops and turn the wheel to lock.  At that point the tire hits the top of the fender lip.  However, this is only at full lock and with the suspension compressed enough to hit the bump stops.  Would it ever be possible to hit a bump hard enough at full lock to put the tire into the fender?  I can still take the tires back and trade them in for either 215/60/15 (same width, .8" smaller diameter) or 205/60/15 (about 1/2" narrower and 1.7" smaller diameter).  I really don't want to go to the 205 as it will mainly be a street car and I don't want to sacrifice that much rubber.  Can I get away w/ what I've got or should I go to one of the other sizes?

well on my lowered car with 245s on a 8.5 inch rim in the front  my wheel just slighly touched on full lock ... so i just trimed her slightly and never had a problem  {before or after}

4406Scamp,
Great to see her coming along.   LOVE that GoManGo color.    I've been looking a lot at tire sizes too as I'll have to make that decision before too long.   I'll be going with 17" wheels, so whole different situation.

What I would offer on your situation would be to switch to 60 series on the front to keep the sidewalls matched a little better with the rear and help handling just a scosh (sp?) while helping lessen the chance of rubbing.

If they ONLY rub at full lock and full compression and you have good shocks (I'm sure you do), I'll bet the only time you could expect them to rub would be while running from the Police...

I'm leaning toward 225-50-17 fronts and 275-50-17 rears.   Just have a little more researching and fitting to do...

Thanks for the input.  Fasttcars, I thought of that too until I realized that the top 6" of the fender lip came rolled from the factory (probably for the same reason?) so I can't really gain much there.  I might go ahead and trade them in for the 60 series and gain the .8" in diameter.
