PS pump - don't....
« on: June 04, 2008, 05:14:34 PM »

I put on an early style saginaw pump on the 318. (off a 72 Fury)  It was cleaned and painted and looked really nice. While the engine is still out, I though I'd check the pump.  I put in fluid, no leaks, that's good.  I disconnected the pressure line, and put the end in a bucket.  Spinning the pump CW, absolutely no fluid was moved out the HP hose.  Do they need to be primed?  I spun it maybe 50 times, still no fluid came out the pressures side.    Any clues?

If this is shot, anyone have a good early style saginaw. pump (6" pulley)?

I don't know how it is built but I'm sure it has a relief valve that you spinning by hand would not overcome.

try connecting an old pulley to an electric drill, then try spinning the pump.

It is a vane style pump and needs to spin fast for the vanes to seal.
